An image flashed in my mind. This man in this same position, but shirtless and holding me against a rock like now.

And me … wanting him. A force too strong for words pulling me to him.

Just like I felt now.

I blinked, confused and dazed, and pushed hard against his chest. He didn’t budge. “Get off me!” I yelled.

He took a small step back.

I made to turn and walk away, wherever this tunnel led me, but the dizziness and the pain won. I tried catching myself on the rocks, but my hand slid past them as I fell back and blacked out.

* * *

A warm handcupped my face, and I turned my head toward it. This hand, this warmth, this touch … it was welcome and familiar.

I miss it.

I snapped my eyes open and stilled. I was seated against the rocks, and the man leaned over me, his face so, so close. One of his hands was on my face, tilting it up, and the other on my head. He pressed something to the cut there. I hissed.

“Welcome back,” he said, his voice deep, but soft. “Brace yourself.”

For—I gritted my teeth as a burning sensation started at the cut. “W-what are you doing?”

“I’ve found your first aid kit. I’m applying an antibiotic cream to your cut. Your healing will speed this up, but this and a small bandage should hold it for now.”

He pulled back and reached for something beside him—the first aid kit. I stared at him, not understanding a thing.

“Why are you helping me?”

His eyes found mine and he looked at me as if I was crazy. “While you were out, I thought about your situation. I don’t know exactly what happened or how, but I’m convinced your memories were erased and that you’ve been told something completely different from the truth.”

I scoffed. “Does that even make sense?”

“After everything we lived through this last year, I would say it could.”

We… he saidwe.

I crossed my arms, which pulled at the cut in my back and made me wince in pain. I ignored it as best as I could. “Then tell me what you know.”

His brows curled down. “What’s my name?”

I stared at him. “I don’t know.”

The pull inside my chest tugged harder.Yes, it said, you know. Maybe I did know, when I was part of his pack, before they had tried to kill me and I ran away.

He let out a sigh. “My name is Shane.” He shifted his position, coming to sit right by my side, his torso facing my side.

I leaned to the other side. “What are you doing?”

“I’m going to tell you what I know while you let me look at this cut.”

It wasn’t a question. I bit down on my cheek, wanting to tell him no, but the damn thing was hurting. If he could put some healing salve on it and bandage it well enough so I could then fight my way out of here, great.

“Fine.” I twisted a little bit, giving him better access to my back.

“This will be long,” Shane said and then he launched into a crazy tale.

According to him, he and I found out we were mates when witches who were once allies to our pack, the Nightmist coven—Dot’s former coven—attacked after his little sister’s birthday party. We went into a fissure inside a rock formation to hide from them, and that was when the bond snapped.
