Get up.

The demons holding me dragged me inside the tunnel. I screamed again and conjured my darkfire. I cast two big-ass bolts over my hands and—

The demons snuffed it out as if it was nothing.

A third demon, his body mostly shadows now, passed right through me. I felt like swimming in syrup. Nausea assaulted my stomach, and my head spun.

What the hell?

I tried catching my feet on the rough tunnel ground, to slow down the demons, to do anything, but there was nothing to grab hold.

Then I heard a growl that sent a shudder through my body. At the tunnel’s mouth, Shane snarled at the demons dragging me away.

And he shifted.

But not to his human form.

To another wolf. A bigger one, darker, with red eyes, and who stood on two legs.

Shadow Wolf.

The words simply came into my mind.

He charged, and fear sliced through me. He was faster and stronger, and he cut through the demons who appeared between us in five seconds flat.

He lunged and closed his mouth around the throat of one of the demons holding me, his sharp teeth coming inches from my throat. I yelped and yanked back. The other demon held me tighter, but I used my free hand to throw darkfire at him. It exploded against his chest, pushing him back a foot or so and making him release me.

I called my magic, but before I could kill the bastard, Shane jumped at him. In two seconds, the demon was gone.

Then Shane turned to me.

His mouth peeled back, his teeth bared, his red eyes shining, and his body poised for another attack.

I lifted my hands. “Shane.”

A memory came to me fast and unbidden.

Shane, just like this, with blood dripping from his mouth, and me in this same position, with my hands up like this, and telling him, “It’s okay. We won. You’re okay now. I’m okay now.” He'd snarled and charged at me. I thought it would be my end, but instead, he had stopped in front of me, leaned into me, and changed into his human form, while both of us folded to the ground.

It had worked before, so it had to work again. I took a step closer to him and said, “It’s me. You know me, right? It’s fine now. We’re fine. You can come back.”

Shane howled. His powerful body shivered, and then he shifted.

Back to his human, and very naked form.

Heat spread over my cheeks and I turned my back to him. “Hm, you could—Hm.” I gasped as his strong arms wrapped around me and his warm chest glued to my back. His head lolled forward, to my shoulder.

“When they dragged you away, I lost it.” He turned his face to my neck and placed a soft peck on my skin. My body came alive, and I melted into him. I shouldn’t, I couldn’t. Why? I didn’t remember. All I wanted was this man who set my blood on fire. He grazed his lips up my neck and whispered in my ear, “I can’t lose you again, Raika. I can’t survive that.”

I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t even know why and how, but I felt the same. I turned my face to his.

He pulled back an inch to look into my eyes. “I want to kiss you, but you don’t remember me, and—”

“Just shut up and kiss me,” I whispered, breathless.

He chuckled. “You’ll never change.” He grew serious again and pressed his lips to mine.

“There you are!”
