“What are you?” Ash asked. “A dragon protector or something?”

“Or something.”

I grunted. “Honestly, I planned on killing the dragon so Paimon couldn’t use her magic.” Evelyn shot me a glare. “But if you can take the dragon and keep her away from him, then better. Meanwhile, I have to rescue my mate.” I turned to leave.

“Wait,” Ariella said. She looked at the stranger. “What’s your name?”

He hesitated. “Kaz.”

“Kaz,” she started. “Your quest is noble and we'll either get out of your way or help with it, if you want, but first, we might need your help.”

He frowned.

I clenched my fists. “Why is that?”

One corner of her lips curled up. “I think I have a plan.”

The moment Ivycaused another cave-in, trapping Shane and that other woman inside the tunnel, my heart wrenched and the pain almost brought me to my knees. For a good two minutes, I stared at the rocks as they created a new wall, my mind blank, but my feelings on steroids.

My chest hurt and I could barely breathe.

Shane.

“Come on.” Ivy hooked her arm with mine and pulled me back.

“Wait,” I finally said, my voice frail.

“We need to find Kaz and the dragon,” she said.

I yanked my arm free of her grip, turning to her. “I’m not going.”

She blinked. “What are you talking about?”

“I …” I looked at Roman. I didn’t know what was happening, why, and how, I just knew something was wrong here. “I can’t remember the details, but I know you’re not my mate. Shane is, and I can’t leave him.”

“Shit,” he muttered. He looked at Ivy. “She’s remembering.”

Ivy nodded, a knot between her brows. “The spell is wearing off.”

“I knew staying far from Dot would cause problems,” Roman said.

I gasped. “What the hell are you talking about?”

Ivy shook her head and turned to me. “I’m sorry.” She pressed her hand to my chest and her darkfire hit me hard, wrenching my gut and twisting my insides.

I fought against it. I tried breathing through the heavy sensation spreading through my limbs, but I couldn’t win.

I blinked once, twice, then my eyes didn’t open again.

I came to slowly,my head pounding. I felt like I was in a rocking boat, and I was terribly seasick. I sat up, my eyes adjusting, and I reached up to rub my temple, but both my arms came together. I blinked and stared at my hands. I was seated on a comfortable couch, and my hands and feet were bound by thick ropes.

Desperation clawed its way through my chest.
