Roman, Ivy, and Rotgar stood in front of me—Roman with his hand turned into claws, and Ivy with darkfire in her open palms, and Rotgar with an amused expression on his face, as if he was enjoying this.

“Don’t make me use this,” she said.

I almost laughed at that. “Why? Don't demons relish hurting others?”

Her eyes softened. “No, we don't.”

I faltered, but only for a second. I shot to my feet and ran.

Only to stop once more, frozen in place. “What …?” I could barely move my lips.

Laughter filled the room as Dot made her way down the stairs. “I heard you’ve been a naughty girl, but I didn’t think you were this naughty.” She walked up to me and winked. “I like it.”

“When can you do the spell?” Paimon asked from somewhere behind me.

She looked at him. “Give me about an hour to get everything ready.”

“You should put her inside a witch’s circle before she causes more trouble,” Rotgar said.

Dot wiggled her fingers.

I floated in the air until I was right in the center of the room. Dark light shone from the floor as she etched a witch’s circle with her magic. She closed her hand and the magic left me. I fell to my knees with ahumph, pain shooting up my legs, and barely braced myself before I toppled on my face.

“That should contain her,” she said, walking away.

A phone beeped and Ivy picked hers up. She glanced at the screen. “He’s here.”

“I’ll go get him.” Rotgar ran up the stairs.

He? He who?

Dot disappeared through the door in the back of the room. Paimon walked to a cabinet behind the couch where I had been seated, and picked up a bottle of whiskey and glasses. Roman followed him, probably in need of a drink. I could use one too.

Ivy paced the room, not far from me.

I pushed to my feet. “Since I’ll forget everything anyway, tell me what’s going on?”

Ivy stopped pacing. She looked at me, then at Paimon, but he seemed distracted with his drink. Her eyes met mine again. I didn’t think she would tell me anything, to be honest, but she surprised me when she took two steps closer and said in a low voice, “Your mate found out where we lived. He was there, faced Paimon, Dot, and Rotgar, and then sent a bunch of demon hunters to get them. Paimon, Dot, Rotgar, and the other demons fled here.”

I suppressed a gasp. Shane had done all that. I schooled my features to remain nonchalant. “Where is here?”

Ivy shook her head. “I’m already telling you too much.”

“But I will forget everything.”

“Exactly, so why bother?” Her voice was soft and sad.

I didn’t have an answer for that.

Footsteps echoed from the stairs. Rotgar walked down first, followed by Kaz. The bounty hunter had come back too. What had happened to the dragon, then? And to Shane?

Kaz halted beside Ivy, but Rotgar went to the bar cabinet.

Paimon downed the amber liquid from his glass and marched to the bounty hunter, not too pleased. “I thought I paid you to capture the dragon for me, not to come back empty-handed.”

“I didn’t come empty-handed.” Kaz picked up a shiny, dark dragon scale from his bag and offered it to Paimon. “I’ve lost the dragon. It seems she moved on to Ontario. I was on my way there when I talked to Ivy.”

“He told me where he was going, and I remembered there had been several scales on the mountain,” Ivy said. “Since we’re on the path to the dragon, I thought it would be a good idea if he brought a scale or two for you, Father, so you can recharge.”
