Snarling, Shane ran at them.

Lavinia lifted her hands and a blue round wall rose from the floor, trapping Shane within. “Quick,” she said, her voice strained. Enraged, Shane clawed at the shield. “I won’t be able to hold it for long.”

Killian held up a gun and pointed at Shane.

“No!” I screamed.

He squeezed the trigger four times. Shane stumbled. He growled, but it was a weak thing. Then he folded to the floor. The wall disappeared and I ran to him. Four darts pierced his chest.

“Sedative?” I asked.

Killian nodded. “It was the only thing I could think of to stop him without hurting him.”

It was a good idea.

I reached for him. The fur retreated and he shifted back to his human form. Lavinia picked up a throw blanket from the couch and handed it to me. I covered Shane’s lower body, then cradled his head and moved so my legs served as his pillow.

I ran my hand over his beautiful face.

Lavinia crouched beside me. “It isn’t the full moon yet. What triggered it?”

Killian sniffed the air. “I smell blood.”

“In the kitchen,” I told them.

Killian and Lavinia went to the kitchen. I heard Killian’s loud curse. They came back to the front of the house. “I’ll clean this up.”

“Wait,” Shane said, his voice faint.

I gasped. “You’re awake.”

He groaned, his eyes still closed. “Lock me up. I can’t control it anymore.”

His head lolled back, and he fell into a deep sleep.

Killian looked at me.

My eyes filled with tears. “You heard him. Let’s clean this mess up and lock him up.”

I saton the floor in front of the bars dividing the room in half. Shane slept in the bed on the other side, still out because of the sedative. Killian admitted giving him a strong dose because he didn’t know how much the Shadow Wolf would require to go down. Now that Shane was back in human form, he would be out cold for hours.

This was the room Killian and Lavinia had made for Shane when they first moved here. Shane had confided in them about his curse, and Killian had gotten Drake’s permission to modify the room, without explaining why. Drake trusted Killian, but everyone in the castle knew what went on during full moon. It was hard not to, when he became a massive wolf who wanted to murder everyone on sight.

Including me.

The bars were reinforced with magic, and the windows had the same bars and magic on them. The only door on his side of the room led to the bathroom, which had been stripped to the bare minimum, in case he needed to be locked here while in his human form.

Like now.

After bringing Shane here, Killian and Lavinia went back to the village to clean up the house. We decided not to tell anyone about Roman. The wolves in our pack had already participated in a ceremony to honor his death. If they found out he had betrayed us all, kidnapped me, and then tried to kill Shane and me, he would be cursed for eternity. Better to let them believe he had died weeks ago.

My heart hurt, though. Roman had been a good friend, and I was saddened about how things ended with him.

I couldn’t believe all of this was happening. Couldn’t Shane and I be two wolf shifters in love and raise our family in peace? Why was there a damn curse, a demon who wanted to destroy the world (or take over the underworld), and more terrible things?

People came in and out of the room to check on Shane and me. Lavinia brought me food and sat down with me for a long time. But I didn’t blame anyone for not sticking around. For them, it was boring to watch Shane sleep. For me, it was the only thing that I had to cling to sanity.
