He kissed me, slowly brushing his lips over mine. “That’s good because that’s not going to change either.”

“Grant, where the hell are you? Why is Biscuit… Oh fuck.” Rhys turned away and put a hand over his face. “I did not need to see that.”

I stayed where I was, and Grant used his big body to protect me from Rhys’s gaze.

“Give us a minute,” Grant said as I fumbled through buttoning my pants.

“You need to come to the house,” Rhys insisted.

Grant fixed his own clothes once he saw I was able to stand on my own. “What’s wrong?”

“We got an ID on the body.”

“And?”

“He was FBI.”

Iclosed my eyes and tried to push away my panic. This was my fuckup. I didn’t nail down TJ, and now we were fucked.

“It’s not as bad as it sounds,” Rhys said.

“No, I imagine it’s going to be worse.”

“Just come back and get the full explanation.”

“You too,” Rhys said, looking at Jacob. “You’re clearly one of us now.”

Jacob shook his head. “I’m not.”

“You are.”

“Yes, you are.”

My words and Rhys’s ran together. Rhys raised his brows and gave us a pointed look. I waved him off. “Go on. We’ll be there in a minute.”

“Are you really going to let me come to your family meeting?” Jacob asked when Rhys had left us.

I took his hand and tugged him to me. “I’m sure as hell not leaving you alone. Why did you say you aren’t one of us?”

“I… um… I didn’t want him to get the wrong impression.”

Jacob’s eyes widened when I scowled at him. I was sure I was scary as hell in that moment, but I couldn’t soften my expression. “And what impression would that be?”

“That we… That you…”

“That you’re mine. That this thing between us isn’t going away. Ever.”

“Maybe not, but I… I don’t deserve you.”

“Jacob, you deserve so much more than me. You deserve a life free from danger and threat and—”

“What if that’s not what I want?”

“Then I guess we’ll have to figure things out.” It wasn’t what I wanted either because it meant he would have to leave. That might kill me, but how could I force him to stay here once he didn’t need me anymore? I’d have to work that out later. Everything had seemed so certain while we’d been lying in bed last night. Rhys was right, Jacob was one of us now. I couldn’t think of him any other way.
