“What in the blasted skies above was that lightning bollocks from yer woman?” a rough, yet haughty voice bellowed.

I crept as silently as I could toward the door and held my ear to it. It had been slightly left ajar, and I had the perfect position for listening in without being seen.

“Watch yerself.” That was Kilian’s unmistakable voice.

“The men have a right to fear what they’ve just seen, Captain.” Rek. I recognized his voice as well.“I told you she was dangerous.”

“Aye,” a gruff voice agreed. “And what happens when she turns her fury on us?” Someone spat crudely, hacking up something as they sniffed.

“She needs us.” I heard Killian’s voice as he defended me. “And we shall earn a pretty penny from her estate for aiding in her journey.”

Or perhaps not defending me, but our damnable bargain. “Oh, that pirate,” I muttered quietly to myself under my breath, unwilling to give my position away.

A few grunts were not enough to quell the angry crew member. Could it be Jasper? “I’d rather be alive than dreaming of pennies, no matter how pretty. I say we throw her ladyship overboard before any more damage can be done.”

Bringing my hand to my mouth, I stifled a gasp. Several more grunts sounded once again, as though they were in agreement.

“No.” Killian’s voice had turned cold and unforgiving. “I’ve got my own plans for her.”

I shivered at his implication. Perhaps my debt was far worse than I could even imagine. How much did I truly know of Killian Flynn, anyway? Without a miniscule of doubt, he had surely lured many a woman in with those sinful sky-blue eyes and alluring passion.

“Then we leave her at the archives,” Rek suggested with finality in his tone.

Frowning, I was surprised by their hatred of me because of the magic I possessed.Magic I had not known existed. Power I had been born with, yet just as the stories I had been told of magic casters in the past, these pirates, with whom I knew had stories of their own, wished to turn me out—leave me to my own devices in a strange place that I had never encountered. Bastards. I did not wish this upon myself. Oh, I would learn to control my powers with precision, not only for me, but also to observe their smug faces as I did so.

Listening to Killian tell them it was his decision, I could not bear to hear another word uttered from his lips a moment longer. I hurried away from the office and back toward the main deck.

Standing at the helm of the ship, overlooking the skies, they appeared to be clearing the farther we sailed from the Royal Naval ship we had left behind. At least I had been able to save those men from a horrific death. A death that would have certainly been by my own hand—and weighing upon my conscience for the rest of my days…

I had trusted in the wrong men. The wrong man, to be more precise. I had assumed because Killian had saved me from one villain, that he was better. Yet clearly, that had not been the case. I would not give him an opportunity to seize me, to do whatever it was that his plan entailed.

No. I would outsmart this would-be, believe-himself-clever pirate. I would use him to get to the archives. Procure what I needed.

And then, I would run.
