My hand clasped the weapon at my side. I’d do what I had to in order to get Ainsley out of Highvein, whether she had her answers or not. “Stand down,” I said more firmly. Yet, it still wasn’t enough.

The woman drew a small dagger from her skirts, and I swung my sword through the air, immediately landing in front of her throat.“I’d not think of using that blade if I were you. This is your only warning.”

She grunted but kept her dagger in her hands, facing Ainsley.

Ainsley’s gaze briefly drew mine from the blade at the stranger’s neck. She knew I would not allow this to escalate any further.

“My mother and father gave it to me,” she said, this time barely whispering her response.

I froze, awaiting what would come next, as it would tell us all we needed to know—whether this woman was friend or foe.

“I don’t believe you. Whoever you are, your parents shouldn’t have had it, either,” she hissed in retort.

However, Ainsley stared down at the key and back to me with a sadness I vowed to erase from those eyes.

When she gazed at the woman, a small tear pooled at the corner of her eye, but she spoke with purpose, nonetheless. “Wyatt Silverthorne and Hattie Prescott put this key somewhere I would find it,” Ainsley said. “My parents—”

The woman’s blade clattered on the stone at her feet, and I had to yank my sword out of the way as she fell forward on her knees, bowing before Lady Lilstrum.
