Page 25 of Defying the Rogue

“Forty-five degrees north, Rek,” he ordered. “Jasper, ready the cannons to fire on my command.”

I sent another bolt through the sky as my magic began to grow restless inside of me. It needed to be released, and whomever was attempting to harm us was about to taste the full force of what I could do.

“Killian, where are they?” I shouted, demanding to be heard above the hustle of the crew and Killian’s own orders.

I tightened my fists until my fingernails broke through skin. Another crash of thunder and crackle of lightning arose from my magic, only slightly more in the distance this go-round. “Do you see them?” I shouted.

Killian’s searching continued, growing more frantic as I bombarded question after question upon him.

Harsh rains began blanketing the deck, making it difficult to see anything within the clouds. This was why I needed control. I trembled as the power overwhelmed me, and then whimpered as a few more explosions of thunder sounded, and multiple streaks of lightning illuminated the skies.

“There!” Killian pointed, signaling Rek and then increasing his volume so his crew could hear. “On my command!”

I followed his finger, staring into a mass of clouds that I could not possibly see through. Killian must have seen something, however, and at the rate the sound of cannon fire was coming, it would only be a matter of time before the advancing airship would strike again. And who knew what would happen the next time?

I stretched my arms outward, my palms facing the direction Killian had indicated, and closed my eyes, desperately attempting to hold some semblance of my power together.

“Ready!” Killian cried once more.

My body stilled, quieting before I allowed myself to unleash the force of power raging at my fingertips. Killian glanced at me, and worry rested within his gaze. He had observed me using magic several times before, but I had never attempted this, this pent up-anger and fierce attack into the unknown. Even my aim at the Royal Navy had been quick, and we hadn’t been as threatened in the moment.

All of this felt different.

He shifted back to his spyglass and steadied it. I winced as my wrist flicked, and a large bolt of lightning crashed across the sky, in front of the attacker’s cloud. The resounding thunder pulled a groan from Jo who still lay at my side.

“Wait!” Killian commanded. He moved from the portside of the ship, closer to the bow, and looked through his scope once more. “Hold your fire.”

Another cannon sounded, this one flying over the sails.

“I repeat: Hold your fire!” he ordered before turning his full attention to me. “The ship behind the cloud—it’s got Rookhallow Proper’s colors flying.”

“What?” I exhaled as my magic slipped from my fingers, and the lightning truly began.
