“After you, love.” I quirked a grin at Ainsley and heard Jackson clear his throat at my back.

Jo, Rek, and Jackson took up the rear as we trailed behind Evelyn and Bruno toward a narrow underground tunnel, which led up a set of stairs and supposedly outside the dome.

The end of the tunnel did indeed lead to an air chamber, where the water caster pressed her palm against an odd-looking mechanical device that lit up green at her touch. The gadget appeared to be molded to fit her hand. A sucking sort of sound echoed in the chamber, along with what seemed to be the turning of cogs, as the door opened to the outside world. I’d seen a lot in my time, but that was…peculiar. After we’d filed outside, Bruno placed his palm on a similar device, and the opening sealed closed once again.

The heat blasted me in the face as soon as I stepped beneath the sun’s rays, and instantly, sweat coated my brow.

Bruno and Evelyn led the group, with Ainsley and I directly behind them, while Jo, Rek, and Jackson followed closely.

“You will need your swords,” Evelyn called out as we left the sandy beach and entered the rainforest. “There is no direct path.”

Everyone unsheathed their swords, and as soon as we stepped foot inside that dreadful place, I understood why.
