“Then she needs to die.”

Silence fell between us until Killian grabbed my hand and pulled me to his chest. He cupped my face and ran his hand behind my neck, bringing my forehead to his. “Whatever happens, Ainsley, know that I’d die to keep you safe, to protect you. You have my heart. And I’ll fight to give us a life free from Gretta and Bash.”

His lips brushed mine softly at first, and then his tongue ran over mine, crushing his body flush against me. A tear pricked at my eye, and I choked on a small sob. Fear of what was to come, knowing we would be facing Gretta and her men—with only one ship to her three.

“Ready the cannons,” Killian commanded as he hugged me and kissed the top of my head. “I believe in you.”

Then he peeled away from me and went to be with his crew as they prepared the cannons for the first wave of attacks.

“Ainsley,” Jo called. “Our magic will be stronger together, working side by side.” She swiveled her gaze to Evelyn. “All of us.”

“Of course it will be,” Evelyn said with a cheerful smile on her face. The woman was borderline mad. Yet her magic would help provide an advantage we would not have had otherwise, as would each of our powers.

“Aim!” Killian’s voice echoed throughout the ship.

An eerie silence fell over everything. My magic was quiet, no storm rolling in, no shouting from the ships that were quickly approaching. Everything was a blanket of silence. And I hadn’t a clue if it were my own mind that had drowned it all out for a final moment of peace, or if it truly was the calm before the battle that was about to wage here in the skies.

“Fire!” At Killian’s command, a wave of cannons blasted in the direction of Gretta’s lead ship.

“Let us create a bit of magic, ladies,” Evelyn said, closing her eyes.

I dug deep, inhaling, as that all-consuming familiar crackling ran throughout my veins, sparking and infusing my magic with everything I had.

A small smile played across my lips as the first raindrop touched my face.

The wind whipped my hair and I observed Jo, moving her hands around, swirling energy as though she had been doing it her entire life.

I couldn’t help but be in awe of her. I shifted my gaze to Evelyn, but as I did, I let out a cry, reaching for her.

From the sky, a figure dropped downward, landing on the deck of the ship.

Gretta.

She seized Evelyn by the throat, grappling with her tunic, ripping away the key she had hidden there, as though it had somehow called to her.

“I’ll be taking this.” She cackled, shoving Evelyn toward us and unsheathing her blade as the blasts of cannon fire rang out in the sky.
