Chapter26

Not enough.

The faint, scared whisper inside of me had retreated in utter panic, even as she continued chanting at me. What her goal was I didn’t know, because there was no turning back now. I was here with nowhere to run. It was me, the attacker, and…

A friggin’ dragon.

The battle with the attacker had halted as the dragon soared above us. I stared in stunned horror, too shocked to move as the beast roared so loudly, my hair rustled in its wake.

The dragon changed course once it finished flying overhead, and it made its way back to the roof. Back to me, and the attacker.

This time, when the beast howled, fire rained down out of its bellowing mouth.

I grunted as I tucked myself in a ball and rolled away from the massive wall of fire the dragon ferociously blew.

A quick search showed me I was the only one who’d rolled away from the fire; the attacker was nowhere to be seen.

I held my hand up, shielding my face from the intensity of the blaze that heated the roof before me.

Then I saw him. Limping but still eagerly moving toward the dragon.

That was why we ran up, why he didn’t seem worried that he’d have nowhere to go.

He had a dragon waiting for him.

Hell no.

Hell to the no.

I fumed at the sight of the attacker and the knowledge of his escape coming together. No! I had not gotten my ass beaten so soundly to lose the attacker now. Even if it was to a dragon.

Shit, damn, fu—

The fire swelled before me, cutting off my incoherent belligerent cursing inside my head. It simmered, flaring slightly, and I turned my attention behind me, toward the intricate pipes. I needed a weapon, now more than ever.

I ran to a group of metalwork and silently vowed I’d make it up to the castle engineers or maintenance crew, whoever ran this sort of thing, and started kicking at a rustier joint in the framework.

“Come on!” I shouted at the object. I glanced over my shoulder and saw the dragon still flying overhead, but its wings were spread like it was looking to make its landing.

I still had time. Even if it was only a moment.

“Ahhh,” I screamed as I kicked twice more, hard enough to feel it in my shins. Finally the pipe broke loose.

I scrambled toward it, yanking it harder and harder until it snapped out of its socket and rested in my hands.

“I hope you're not a critical part of the palace at the moment,” I said to it and then turned, wielding the now perfectly suited weapon above my head.

I ran, jumping through a small opening in the fire. It had begun lessening, and I took the opportunity to bust through the flames before the fire breathing creature had a chance to reinforce the wall it had created to hold me back.

My training had served me well, and my body obeyed the command to press on and sprint toward the attacker.

His limp was enough to give me an edge, finally, and I swung the pipe like a baseball bat as I hurled my body forward. The attacker was reaching up to a saddle-like contraption tied on the dragon’s back. A damn saddle!

But it didn’t matter now. My hit was direct and aim spot on.

The pipe connected with his head and the attacker fell from his climbing position, sprawled out on the roof once more.

I felt the heated breath on the back of my neck a second before the deafening roar sounded in my ear. The dragon turned its head toward me now.
