I unzipped the final case, thankful that this part of my day could end and I could return to my room. Gaudy necklaces rolled out in layer after layer of bright gold and gems too large for Vanessa’s small neck.

“Why would anyone think this is cute?” I growled under my breath as I carefully laid each necklace, earring set, ring, everything carefully in the tall dresser across from the wardrobe.

The next layer had shoes, and thankfully there were only a few horrible-looking pairs left.

After setting everything just right within the wardrobe and shutting the doors, I went to zip the final suitcase closed and pack it away in the small closet that was hiding the rest of Vanessa’s luggage.

A small thunk sounded when I lifted the suitcase up.

“Oh, joy. What piece of jewelry did I forget now?”

A small bundle wrapped in black silk had fallen from somewhere within the suitcase. I unrolled it slowly, muttering under my breath because really, what was the purpose of all of this stuff for one fae.

But instead of jewelry, a small vile rolled out of the silk and into my hand. It looked like perfume and I wouldn’t have looked at it twice, but there was a white wrapping tied around the bottle with a brown string. Black letters were showing through from the wrapping.

Glancing over my shoulder once and waiting a few seconds to ensure no one was coming, I let curiosity get the best of me. I slipped the brown tie off so I wouldn’t have to retie it and undid the paper wrapping around the bottle.

There was a clear liquid inside the bottle. I set it down on the dresser next to me and looked at the short note.

In case it all goes sideways…

Next to the short, ominous sentence was a symbol that froze my blood.

The sentence ended with a dark, shaded-in skull and crossbones.

The universal sign for poison.
