“Once we have that, we take it to the queen. Vanessa gets caught. You are once again recognized for how much you look out for this family. Then Vanessa will be kicked out on her bum, and you and Noah can live happily ever after.”

“Okay, dramatic. But I like where your head is at here for the most part.” I nudged into Nicole’s side. “Thank you for believing me and helping.”

“Anytime. Now hand me a piece of paper so I can try to copy the duke’s writing.”

I watched as she meticulously copied his handwriting on a practice page, repeating letters written in a distinctive way until she’d mastered their appearance. She drafted his signature in the same way. Then she wrote the final letter with incredible care and signed it perfectly. I couldn’t help but become more and more impressed as she worked the seal off of the original letter from the duke without damaging it.

She painstakingly pressed it down on the new letter and let out a huge sigh. “Done.”

The plan had come together perfectly, now I just had to hope our tone and Vanessa’s arrogance at never being discovered would be enough for her to answer her “father” quickly.

A bang sounded, like someone stumbled right outside the door.

“Please tell me that was you somehow?” she whispered.

I shook my head, eyes widening in fear.

I turned my head, desperate for somewhere to hide, but everything was so open near us.

The sound of another door closing, one far too close for comfort, sounded loud as it was slammed shut.

My heart sank into the pit of my stomach.

Well, it had been a good plan. Right up until we got caught with Vanessa’s letter in the mail room with nowhere to hide.
