“You’ll watch your tone, Coraline. I am the prince of the Unseelie, not some punching bag for you to take out your insecurities on.”

I fell back, shocked at the venom spewing from Noah’s mouth.

Ryzel cleared his throat. “Best we save things like this for inside castle walls with no chance of being heard. And sleep.”

He rolled over, and I noticed that the sounds of the others snoring had stopped as well. Great, we’d woken the warriors and now they’d heard our spat as well. So much for rumors about me going away at the castle.

I lay back, pulling the blanket over my shoulder and turning my back toward Noah.

He didn’t say anything. Didn’t try to apologize or calm the tension between us. It lingered. Festered further. And left me believing once more that this gap would never truly heal.

Friendship was out of the question with Vanessa around. Her callousness was rubbing off on Noah, and though I couldn’t believe it, I couldn’t subject myself to it. He’d never believe the note I had in her own written hand. So I’d have to hold it close to me, present it to the king and have him convince the queen from there.

Because Noah was too in love. Too far gone under the Vanessa spell.

And that thought, that truth, made me feel utterly alone.
