Two steps. I was two steps away from unmasking the killer when a hot reel of smoke shot my way. A thud and hit on my back knocked me back to the ground on my hands and knees, and I dropped my sword. My body bruised and exhaustion coming on strong from the capture and fighting threatened to make it so that I couldn’t see who was behind me.

But the smell of sulfur, the heat from the breath. I already knew.

It was a dragon.

I trembled as I rolled over. The dragon’s eyes were too close, much too close to mine. Like it wanted to read my soul.

I whimpered, hating that I showed a sign of weakness, even if it was to a fire-breathing beast.

A figure jumped from the dragon, leaning against the beast like it was an old friend. “You thought you could run away? You’re coming home with me.”

Landon. How had he found me?

“No, thanks,” I said. “You’re not my type.”

But before I could make another movement, the dragon reached out and grabbed me by the leg. Landon mounted the beast, chuckling that ridiculously arrogant chuckle as the dragon lifted me off the ground.

I definitely wasn’t going to be able to fight this.
