Smiling, I continued down the now dirt path, noticing the shops that popped up. An herbalist should be easy to find.

A few of the stone buildings had groups of people gathered out front. A glorious smell from the bakery was the clear reason why so many were gathered around that particular storefront. It was strange, walking through the kingdom here unnoticed, or ignored even. Everyone bustled almost as much as the city. I’d been ignored there too.

But here it was different, or maybe it was the first time I’d felt like I had back there, only now I knew myself enough to know that being ignored didn’t make me unworthy.

Watching the bakery distracted me so much that I bumped into the older woman, who was now in front of me.

“Oh, I’m so sorry,” I said.

She looked me over, a gleam in her eye at my reaction. “No trouble.” She moved over, slightly bowing her head. “No trouble at all for you, milady. Though I’d imagine others wouldn’t be as kind. If you want to live, I suggest you—”

She was cut off by a huge group of men growling at each other almost like a snarl, brushing by people so forcefully, she was removed from my sight. The step I’d taken backward had thrown me on the opposite side of the few beasts as they walked.

One of them stretched their lips wide, revealing glistening sharp white teeth. Given the hairier exterior, I’d call them wolf-like. Perhaps they were werewolves or some kind of shifter.

But either way, they’d just saved me for a second.

Their tumble through the streets left me shaking as I wondered what threat had been on the woman’s lips. Because when the angry men had passed, she was gone.
