Chapter10

Noah didn’t pull away immediately.

No. Instead, now that he’d outed us, he let his forehead rest against mine. “You were already in danger again, and I swore you wouldn’t be.”

His whisper was pained. Filled with emotion that cracked my own heart. “I’m okay, Noah. I’m okay.”

Well aware of the silence surrounding us, I pulled back while clearing my throat. The slight hurt on Noah’s face only lasted a second before he lowered his head once, acknowledging my discomfort with where we were so publicly displaying feelings for each other.

Noah turned to Gregory, who was staring almost open mouthed at us.

“What happened?” Noah’s gruff voice broke through Gregory’s stunned silence.

The Queen stepped forward, walking toward our gathering. “Perhaps Ms. Fray could be of more use at first?”

She narrowed her eyes at me.

“A woman followed me almost as soon as I got to town. Another man was in the tavern I walked into. When I grew uncomfortable, I made my way to find the store I needed, and was dragged into an ally in town.”

I shifted on my feet when I saw Noah visibly tense. I wanted to touch his arm, give him comfort that this wasn’t his fault, but here in this room, with everyone already having seen us as intimate as they needed to for the rumors to keep swirling, I didn’t dare make a move toward him.

“A vampire showed up, and the three of them made it seem like they wanted to take me. I think they thought I was someone more important at the castle. When I said I was a feeder, they were surprised.” I swallowed the lump in my throat. I hadn’t realized how much the vampire’s words had scared me until I was thinking and speaking about what had happened back there. “I screamed and the guards from the jail showed up. Saving me.”

The Queen rubbed at her temple. “We do not need more chaos in town right now. Especially with the King at the front lines.” She crossed her arms and paced a few times. “What else to add?”

She was looking at Gregory who stood straighter. “We heard cries calling out that there were Seelie spies. I gathered my unit, leaving only a few guards behind and we surrounded Ms. Fray and the attackers. The vampire got away, and so did the male fae that had been there. The woman we were able to bring in and she’s available for questioning as soon as you’d like, from what I’m told.”

Gregory didn’t take his gaze off the Queen, nor did he falter when she waved her hand, like she was more annoyed than anything. “Thank you. Someone take care of getting her and bringing her to me now. We’ll find out who she is and what the hell she was thinking being here in Unseelie and trying to start a fight.”

The room was silent. No one dared to speak as the two castle guards who had met me at the front doors were gone to get their prisoner.

Noah moved closer to me, grabbing my hand. The Queen’s jaw ticked and I was stuck between what to do. The small comfort of his hand in mine meant everything, but I worried too. Was this the right place for this? What would the council members say?

A scuffle by the door drew all of our attention, more quickly than I was expecting.

“Please, please. I don’t know what’s happening.” The woman who’s taunted and then taken part in attacking me, humbled herself to looking very weak as the guards practically dragged her in.

“This has to be a misunderstanding.”

The Queen watched the situation play out before her. Noah stalked toward his mother’s side. The two of them side by side were fearsome to behold.

Noah’s anger radiated off of him, demanding the attention of the woman. As the guards dropped her to her knees, her body trembled.

She was a good actress, I’d give her that.

“Your Majesty,” the woman said with her head bowed. “I don’t know what the meaning of this is, but please ask me anything and I’ll tell you the truth.”

“Silence.” Noah’s voice was stern, sharp, but not shouting and out of control. I knew his anger boiled beneath the surface, but he was careful not to let his emotions get the best of him.

Save for the emotions tied to me, I guess.

The woman surprisingly obeyed.

The Queen took two steps down the red carpeted stairs she stood atop. “Do you know what charges you were brought in on?” she asked.

The woman shook her head from side to side.

“No?” The Queen tsked.
