“Nicole,” Gabe said as she lingered near Aron. “Could you assist with the guards. I need someone we trust.”

“Yeah.” She looked at Aron, and back to me before jogging to catch up with Gabe.

“I can see the healers and be ready. I’ll have Thomas get the troops ready while they work.” Captain Coltrain limped forward but Noah pivoted, blocking his path.

“I can do it, here.” Noah walked over to a large oak tree that stood grandly to our right and knelt beside it.

Captain Coltrain was frowning at the Prince, most likely wondering what he thought he could do that the healers couldn’t. The healers were really just multiple fae using their healing powers at once .

But I knew what Noah was doing. Aron had said he wasn’t strong enough to heal himself. So Noah was going to try to amplify his own powers.

And he’d needed everyone gone to do it. To try.

My prince closed his eyes, as the light I’d seen before emanated from his hand. Near the roots of the tree the light grew, while Noah concentrated. When it extinguished, he rose.

“Here we go,” Noah said as he brought his hand to Aron’s side.

The light was the bluish green hue again, energy taken from the earth and the pure nutrients of the ground, mixing with the magic in Noah.

The light looked as though it seeped inside Aron completely, only going out once it had glowed once more on his chest.

Aron’s wide eyes were staring down his body and grew larger as his body seemed to adjust itself straighter on its own.

When the light died out, the Captain shifted his upper body from side to side. He made fists with his hands and bounced back and forth on his feet.

“What just happened?” he asked.

Noah heaved out a sigh, and I quickly stood by his side, my arm instinctively going around his waist. He shook his head at me, a smile spreading. “I’m actually fine.”

“You just pulled magic from earth. You used magic. Unseelie magic.” Aron was muttering, blinking rapidly as he paced in front of Noah. “How? When?”

Noah chuckled. “I’m just happy it worked. I’ve been experimenting. If I can understand it more, I may be able to help others get some abilities as well.”

Captain Coltrain froze and looked at him. “And give the Unseelie quite the advantage.”

I beamed at Noah, pride swelling inside of me at the ways he was constantly pushing himself for his people. Again I was struck with how great a King he would make one day.

“Well, there’s no time to waste,” Aron locked arms with Noah. “I’ll ready everything for our departure.”

There it was again. Our departure.

Captain Coltrain hurriedly left leaving the secret meeting down to just me, and Noah. I tugged on his arm to get him to look at me. “What the hell is going on?”

“There are protocols in place if anything happens to the King. Laws we have had forever that determine what happens so that there is no question of what to do when things are dire.”

I wasn’t liking the sound of this.

“With the King being kidnapped, the best warrior, regardless of stature within the Unseelie must be the one to lead any retrieval. Getting the King is priority.”

I nodded. “Of course it is. So Captain Coltrain and and the others will go get him.”

Noah took both of my hands in his. “I’m the named warrior for this situation.”

“That’s ridiculous. You’re the one who takes the throne if anything were to happen, the Kingdom can’t lose both of you,” I said.

“The laws trump what we feel emotionally and help guide and make the decision so no one acts rashly. This is the scenario that we have prepared for and it’s the one we must carry out.”

“Noah,” I said as I tried to form coherent thoughts. Pulling my hands away, I ran them over my hair. “There is no logic in this. Why would any of you think that this is right. It’s a terrible idea. Awful. Change the law. You all are the royal family.”
