Levi
Ipushed all concerns about my job to the back of my mind until I finally dropped Summer off at her hotel. I hated to part ways with her, especially after our session on the beach, but she had a party to get to, and I had to face Keith. I had no doubt in my mind that Amanda went straight to him with the news of my lie.
I walked back to the boardwalk and got into my rental car. When I arrived at my own hotel, Keith was waiting for me. He was sitting in the hotel bar, at a table near the entrance where he could see me come in. I had to walk right past the bar to get to the elevators and his voice called out to me, drawing my attention to where he sat.
It was Thursday night, which apparently wasn’t an especially busy time for the lounge, because there were only two other people in the place—a pair of older women sitting at a table in the corner. That was good. I didn’t want a lot of witnesses for what I was sure was going to be a tense conversation. Keith’s mouth thinned into a slash as I took a seat across from him.
The bartender started to come out from behind the bar, but I waved him off. I was certain I wasn’t going to be hanging out with Keith for long.
“I guess Amanda talked to you?” I asked without preamble.
He nodded. “You know, I hoped that she was lying, just being petty about the fact that you obviously aren’t interested in her. But when I knocked on your door and didn’t get an answer…”
“I’m an ass,” I said, confessing straight up. “I shouldn’t have lied to you.”
He hesitated for a moment, then asked, “What’s so important that you skipped out on a day of team building that the company has already paid for?”
Shit.I didn’t even think of it that way.
“It’s the girl,” I admitted. “Summer.”
“The one that approached us on the beach?”
“Yeah, that’s the one. I told you it was complicated, and it is, but I’m trying to fix that.”
Keith sighed. “Matters of the heart, huh? I get that, but you need to understand that I’m not happy about this. And Amanda has a big mouth, so the whole team probably knows by now. It doesn’t look good for you.”
“I’m sorry.” I didn’t know what else to say.
“Behavior like this isn’t going to help you get your promotion.”
Woah.Keith had to mean business if he was threatening my promotion. I’d been working hard to prove myself for months and the two of us had been talking about the creation of an upper management position for me. The company had been growing for about a year, and he needed the help running it.
“Did I blow my chance?” I asked, needing to know my fate and if I’d totally screwed things up.
Keith sighed again, running his hand roughly down his face. “You need to be present tomorrow. If I’m going to give you a promotion in the near future, I need you to show the others that you’re a team player.”
