With a faint laugh, I reach out and wipe my thumb over his mouth.

His answer is a bite to my thumb. “I’ll wear it,” he decides.

With a hum, I move around him for the carriage. But with my back to him, my face slackens with a bout of fear.

If he wears the smears of glitter on his mouth that came from mine...

The other fae in the Court will notice.

That’s a statement I’m not sure I want out there.

I have one month left, minus some days, and the last thing I need is a new reason for Elden to home in on me with murder on his mind.

The prince comes up to my side and helps me into the carriage. I sit myself on the cushioned bench facing the path we’ll take. I get a little dizzy facing the other way around.

The prince, to my surprise, parks himself beside me and I have to scoot over a little to make space for him. His body might be lean compared to other dark fae, but it’s much broader than any human I’ve ever known, and I lived on a farm where muscles are built.

I slide up to the other window.

Looking out, I watch as the courtyard starts to shift and peel back. The carriage is moving.

“Listen to me closely, April.” Daein reaches out for a loose curl that falls from just above my temple. He twists it around his finger. “Do not overindulge yourself. At most, you are permitted two bites of fruit and one sip of wine. You may dance, but with no male. Talk to no male other than myself, is that understood?”

I cut a glance at him and nod.

His finger releases my curl and he shifts closer to me, snaking his hand up to the back of my neck. He grazes his thumb over my skin.

“Stick to the humans,” he tells me. “Kuris are safe for the most part, but avoid the litalves at all costs. And, this is very important, do not speak my name. If you need my attention, wait behind me at my left until I am ready.”

“How will you know I’m there?” I ask, frowning at him.

His smile is small. “I will smell you.”

My lashes lift with widening eyes. “Oh.” I didn't know he could do that.

“Do not sneak off to alcoves,” he warns me. “And you will stay within eyesight of me the entire time.”

I nod again, this time sharply.

It seems to appease him.

“Why even bring me?” I ask after a pause.

His smile turns dark. “And do not question me.”

I return his smile with a daring one of my own. “Sometimes, I think you like when I do that.”

He plants a harsh chaste kiss on my lips that both brings aches to my front teeth and ends the conversation for the rest of the ride.
