“Maybe he will.”

Her words hang in the air between us.

The moment is broken with a bitter laugh that escapes me.

Terry smiles in response.

After a while, I shake my head and confess to her, looking down at my lap, “He kissed me, Terry. He kisses me, still.”

Shock slackens her face. She aims the stunned look at me.

Then, all she says is one warning. “Tread carefully, April. A kiss from a dark fae to a human can be a deadly gesture.”

“I need to get out of here,” I say, falling to land on my back. “I need to get home.”

“I hope you do.”

I look at her, at the sadness slackening her face. “When do you leave?”

Her smile is grim. “Not for a lifetime back home.”

“How did you end up here, Terry?”

“My father traded me,” she says. “He couldn’t feed us anymore. Hard being a fisher when the guards there steal all of your catch. Then the prince came to collect on a neighbour’s bounty and ... my father begged him for a deal of his own. He took me in the middle of the Chill—and I’m not to return until long after my family are gone.”

I look up at the thick, black sky. “We’re going home, Terry. Both of us.”

“How?”

“I’ll figure something out.”
