Chapter Seven

RHYS

I swirl mytuicaaround in the glass, smelling the plum brandy, hoping that it will take away my heavy thoughts. After a few drinks in, I’m still feeling the weight of the world upon my shoulders. In most cases my homeland drink does nothing but serve its purpose, making me a tad drunk and worry free. On this day though, it does not do that. On this day...it’s making me realize that I’ve come to my very last resort. I’m going to have to do something that I might regret, but at this point, it’s my only option. I need to make some headway on my mission here, and thus far, nothing has gone my way.

Vera is no naive girl, in fact she’s much more than that and I see it now. She’s a Queen to her country in every right, but she doesn’t see that while she has some power - she fails to hold all of it. That is where I come in and where I hope she can see my value. While she is fierce, terrifying but yet kind...she needs my help, even if she doesn’t want to admit it. I’ve heard the name Glib being spoken amongst the streets, overhearing people speak about him deal drugs. He’s the drug lord, while she’s the fearless warrior queen ready to take him down. In a way, I admire her for that. For wanting to make this world a better place. But she can’t do it alone, or else she’ll fail.

She’s made it very clear that she wants me out of this country. It’s simply not going to happen. I’ll be here for as long as I need to be here, whether she likes it or not. Vera doesn’t see that there is opportunity here. For me to get what I need, and for her to accomplish what she’s been trying to for years.

I rise from my chair, taking a swig of the last remaining drops oftuicaand head out my front door, down the stone path and through the gates into the heart of the city. It should only take me about ten minutes to get to Vera’s place and during this time I can think of what it is I will say to her. How I will convince her that this is the right thing to do for both of us. One of two things will happen, she will either laugh in my face and tell me to fuck off, or agree that this is the best suited option for us both.

I pull my suit jacket closer to my body, cursing myself for not grabbing a coat on this cold night. This few minute walk seems to drag on forever in this weather. I feel something wet hit my face as I walk and look up to the sky, seeing snow beginning to fall heavily. It might have just started, but I’ve seen how heavy the snow can lay here. In just a couple of hours we may have a few inches. This time tomorrow it could be over a couple of feet. I guess we’ll see what mother nature has in store for us.

I turn the corner and head for the building where I know Vera’s apartment is. There are two men stationed outside of the front entrance, guarding their fearless queen from the looks of it. Cocked eyebrows are thrown in my direction as I approach them. “Now boys, you know who I’m here to see.”

They whisper amongst themselves before one pulls out a phone. “I’ll text her now.”

Not even a moment later I hear the sound of a window budging, “What the hell do you want at this hour?” I glance up to see half her body sticking out of a window, getting a really nice look at those perky tits of hers.

“To speak to you,” I reply back. The street lights illuminate her enough to where I can see her expression. For a moment, I think she wants to tell me to fuck off, but at the wave of her hand I know that tonight I will be speaking to her about my idea. About our alliance of sorts.

“Well, she’s allowed me to pass. Move over boys,” I say to dumb and dumber. The one on the left looks like he wants to kill me, while the other steps out of my way so I can make it through. I head upstairs in the direction of Vera’s apartment, wondering why in the hell there’s not an elevator. The woman lives on the third floor, and I’m not the type of man who enjoys physical activity unless it has to do with me unleashing my load into a hot cunt.

When I step into the hallway her apartment resides in, I see her standing in her doorway, wearing nothing but a blue and black striped, chiffon robe. “I was about to play with my kitten. What do you want?”

“I didn’t take you as the type who likes cats,” I retort, heading her way.

She giggles. “Not the type of kitten I mean, silly Romanian.”

Oh.

“I’d like to discuss something that I feel will benefit the both of us,” I start off saying.

“Ugh!” she grumbles, throwing her hands up in the air. “You come here this late at night for business. Stupid man. Come inside so I don’t freeze my tits off.” Vera heads in her apartment while I follow closely. She sits down on a small, vintage couch that looks like it’s from a Victorian era. As she pulls her legs close to her body, her tits are fully on display. I never have a problem looking at her in the first place because she’s a damned vision, but when she’s like this...taunting me...I just want to choke her.

“Well...stop staring at my boobs and get on with it so I can play with myself.”

At this point, I don’t get shocked by whatever comes out of her mouth. Vera is not the typical type of woman. She’s the complete opposite.

“You’ve realized that I’m not going to leave until I get what I want,” I say, looking over her features to see if she understands.

“You’ll leave when you’ve had enough of my torment.” I roll my eyes at her response. She’s trying to scare me out of this city, but she won’t, and she never will.

“I’m not going to leave, Vera. It’s best you understand that now. I have a solution, though, a solution that will give us both what we want.” Vera cocks her head to the side as she listens to what I’m saying, obviously interested. “It’s evident you want the Ukraine and to abolish all drug use. I’ve heard the rumors about your country and what success you have made over the last few years, but you still have one big problem - Glib. Thus far you haven’t been able to take him down, and you won’t be able to unless you have more power. That’s something I can give you.”

“I don’t need you to get power.” Vera hisses, those eyes of hers scanning over my body. I know what she’s doing. She wants me to think that she doesn’t need me, but the reality is that she does.

“That’s where you’re wrong. You do need me, Vera. This is my suggestion, the two of us form an unbreakable alliance. One that will give both of us what we want. I will get trade routes in the Ukraine while you can grow your underground businesses here and in Russia, plus you’ll have the entire Romanian Clans behind you in the process of overthrowing Glib.”

Vera’s mouth opens in a small ‘o’ before she closes it. I can see her mind running rampant with the questions she’s keeping locked inside. Her eyes close for a few moments before she stares right at me, anger burning behind those irises. “You want me to marry you.”

“Exactly that. I want us to be married, to have everything that we both want, need and desire.”

“You thought about every part of this before bringing it up to me. Romanian, you knew what I would say to this proposition.”

“Because I know what you want more than anything.” I reply.

“And what is that?” she inquires, shifting herself in her seat.
