“Uh, it went good. I’m in the clear,” she says, walking over to me. Something crosses over her face, telling me she is bothered by the fact I’m here.

“Bethany, what’s the matter?” She shouldn’t hide from me.

“. . . Do we have to talk about this here, right now?”

“Yes.” I grumble out, losing patience. I’m about to go deal with her fucking crazy husband and I need to know why she’s been so distant.

“I overheard something Ion and Mariana said the other day, and it messed with my head a bit.”

“What do you mean?” I inquire.

“I can’t remember it word for word, but it gave me the impression they think I’m going to ruin your lineage, whatever that means.”

I take in a breath, wanting to choke Ion out for even bringing this up within earshot of her. Bethany knows what type of business I’m in, however she doesn’t know how outdated the way we run it is. I had to reveal it because she wanted to know how I had all these connections and was dropping all this cash on her. Besides, I believe in honesty between us.

She wouldn’t understand any of it, so of course her overhearing the Petrans discussing lineage seemed like a shot at my relationship with her.

“I can’t go into detail here, sweetheart. But just know I’ve chosen you. My position in my . . . job, will not change. I just need you to trust me. Okay?”

Reluctantly, she nods her head. “Alright. Want to grab a late lunch?”

I sigh, “Unfortunately I can’t. I have a business matter to attend to, but we can do dinner tonight.”

“Okay, that sounds great.”
