Chapter 27

Bethany

One Week Later . . .

I’ve lost my fucking mind. Seriously.

“This is a joke, right? I just got you back in my life and now you’re jumping on a plane with Leon and moving to Romania?” While Natasha seems irritated, I know she’s happy for me.

“When you put it like that, it does sound bad. But you know it didn’t happen that way. Leon and I met months ago, took time apart and created a friendship which led to a beautiful love story. He was here for me when I needed him the most, Tash. When most men would’ve run far away into the hills, Leon stuck by me.”

She falls back onto her end of the couch, kicking her legs up like an annoyed teenager. “Ugh! I hope you know I’m happy for you, but I also want to tie you up and throw you in my wine cellar. Surely you wouldn’t dare leave. I’m happy you’re so happy, Beth, but it feels like I’m losing you again.”

I lean down, wrapping my arms around my best friend and hug her tight. “You aren’t losing me at all. Leon told me he has to come over to New York a couple times every quarter, and maybe we can meet up every chance we get when I come with him?”

“Yeah, I’d like that. At least I’ll be seeing you more than when you were with Noah.” She mutters.

“Yep, you sure will!” I smile, rising up from the couch. “I feel like I have my entire life back now, Tash. While I’m scared, I’m also excited for the opportunity to see more of the world.”

She sits up, frowning for just a moment. “I’m sorry. I don’t mean to be insensitive. I’m thrilled you have Leon, truly I am. I’m just sad at the same time to be losing you again in a sense. It was so nice to have you around while you were here, and the kids loved having you with them too. It’s not going to be the same without their aunt Bethany.”

“Oh, don’t worry. I’m not taking anything personally. I understand where your feelings are coming from. Just remember that this time things are so different; I have control now. I can choose what I want to do, if I want to work. The world is my oyster right now!”

Natasha wraps her arms around me in a tight hug, “You’re damn straight. While I’m sad to see you go, I know it’s for the best. I’d hate for you to stay here and be unhappy. At least with Leon I know he’ll take care of you and make sure you are happy.”

My phone vibrates from the side table, so I peer over and look at the screen. “I have to go Tash. Leon told me to meet him at the air strip in about thirty minutes and I want to get there a little early.”

“Oh, okay.” Natasha rises, “Make sure you travel safe and contact me once you land in Romania, okay?”

“You got it.”

I leave Natasha and Anton’s house, heading straight for the airport. Traffic is thick and causes me to spend a little longer than I wanted on the road. I had borrowed one of Anton’s cars to get me to the airport and they instructed me to leave the keys inside the car and lock it once I was done. It’s a newer model so they can see where it’s parked from an application on their phone.

I end up running towards the plane after realizing I’m ten minutes late. Leon’s probably having a heart attack already.

I see him standing in the doorway to the plane, not looking amused in the least bit. “I know. I’m sorry I’m late! Traffic was ridiculous on the way here.”

“You know, there’s this magical device called a cell phone that gives you the ability to call and notify people of such issues.” Yep, he’s not happy.

“I didn’t want to call. It was more important for me to focus on the road.” I say, hoping my safety first concept will save me.

He chuckles, knowing exactly what I’m doing to save my hide. “You know I’d rather you be safe. Thank you for not putting yourself at risk.”

“I knew you’d say that. So, are you ready to go wheels up and whisk me off to Romania?”

All I get is a beaming smile from him, telling me everything I need to know.
