“You didn’t finish your dinner,” I admonish teasingly. “Weren’t you hungry?”

“Oh, I was hungry,” he says as his eyes wander over my naked body. He takes two steps across the kitchen and takes the plate out of my hand, tossing it carelessly in the sink. “I’m still hungry.” He kisses me fiercely, lifting me into his arms. “Just not for food.”

I kiss his neck, his shoulder, and his jaw as he carries me out of the kitchen and toward the bedroom. My stomach flutters with anticipation, the feeling only heightened by the fact that I have some idea now of what’s in store for me, after being fucked by this man twice.

When we reach the bedroom, he lays me out on the bed and follows me down, his kiss hot and demanding as his muscular body settles over mine. A thrill of fear and arousal dances through me.

Holy shit, I’m gonna be sore tomorrow. Can I even take any more?

I can hardly believe he has more to give, but his cock is already pressing against my thigh, hard and ready.

And fuck it, if he’s ready for more, so am I.

I tangle my legs around his and kiss him back, giving in to the fierce need that burns between us like some kind of unquenchable flame.

But just as I start to lift my hips for him, reaching down to guide him to my entrance—a piercing shriek shatters the night.

Chapter20

Sophia

The shriekingsound cuts through the haze of desire we’re both floating in like a machete slicing through tissue paper. My pulse jumps at the shock of it, and Lucas reacts immediately.

He leaps off of me and the mattress, rips the closet door open, and tugs on a pair of pants all in less time than it takes me to scramble out of bed.

Another shriek joins the first one outside, making my hair stand on end.

“What is that?” I ask frantically, sitting up and glancing toward the window. Movement catches my attention out of the corner of my eye, and I glance back toward Lucas in time to catch the dress he tosses in my direction and tug it over my head.

“Another attack,” he snarls, his eyes glowing fully red. “Stay back!”

In the space of a few seconds, he flings the big window open and jumps through it into the dark. Against the starry sky outside, I can see the shadow of his true form taking shape. I pull pants on under the dress, as I’m not about to waste time looking for underwear but don’t really want to go commando, then race to the window. As best I can, I try to keep myself hidden behind the curtain.

Soft garden lights illuminate the scene with a surreal sort of gentleness. Six beasts, larger than wolves and plated like armadillos, circle Lucas. As though moving with a single mind, they spring to attack him all together. Lucas moves faster than I can track, twisting and ducking, slashing and throwing punches. One of the creatures dies with a yelp, and another falls silently beside him. They shimmer as they die, their demonic beast forms melting away and leaving human forms lying dead on the ground.

I stare, silent and terrified, as Lucas fights. Two of the beasts are attacking him from behind as he slaughters a third, and for a moment, I’m certain that one of them is going to sink its teeth into Lucas’s spine. And yet, it never so much as touches him. Lucas’s tail lashes out, wrapping around the thing’s throat and snapping its neck.

He whirls, decapitating the third. As the body falls, shimmering to human form, he freezes. His glowing eyes scan the silent garden. He pivots slowly, panning his gaze around the hedges and shadows, but nothing moves. Just as I start to breathe a sigh of relief, my gaze is drawn back to the bodies on the ground. My focus darts back and forth between them, counting again and again.

Shit. There are only five bodies.

My body tenses, and my gaze darts around the darkened area that surrounds the house.

All the breath rushes from my lungs as I see a figure lunging at me from the darkness, leaping toward the open window with superhuman speed and power. There isn’t any time to scream or cower—it’s moving too damn fast.

I stumble backward, but before I can get more than half a step, the thing grabs me. I struggle against its hold, jerking sideways, and we tumble out the window. A smoky blur flashes across my vision, connecting with the thing in mid-air, smashing it sideways before its vicious teeth can close around my throat.

I fall the rest of the way to the ground—which is only a few feet away by now, thank fuck—landing with a soft thud on the grass. My heart beats frantically as I scramble to my feet, looking over at the demon that attacked me. He’s impaled on the small wrought iron fence that surrounds the garden, his limp body shimmering lightly. Lucifer towers over the corpse, barely breathing hard as he turns to face me.

“Are you all right?”

I nod, too stunned to speak. And this time, my shock isn’t because of some revelation about my billionaire boss. It’s because I recognized the face of the demon who tried to attack me.

Lucas must pick up on something in my expression, because he steps closer, allowing his human guise to fall back into place. “Sophia. What is it?”

“I know him,” I blurt out. “That one. That’s the drug dealer, the one who got me into all this in the first place. I thought he was just—I didn’t know—he’s a demon?”

Lucas snarls, his eyes flashing red. “He sent you to steal my artifact from me. Idiot!”
