“No,” she replies sheepishly, her bravado dying as quickly as it arose. “So you want to go back to America?”

A breath gets trapped in my throat as I inhale sharply. I too want to know the answer to this question.

Saint’s silence is all the answer she needs.

“You’re doing this forher. Aren’t you?” When he averts his gaze, she shakes her head, furious. “Un-fucking-believable. You’d risk us all so she can go back home to herhusband? Is that it? You’re more pussy-whipped than I thought.”

Saint advances, as does Zoey, and neither sibling backs down. But I can’t let them fight. Not over this. Not over me. It’s time I chose a side because there is no happy medium. No Switzerland. For this to end, I know what I have to do.

“Stop!” My feet slip and slid over the flooring as I rush to wedge my way between Zoey and Saint. I stop them from colliding by keeping them at arm’s length. My hands are pressed over Saint’s chest and Zoey’s. Their frantic hearts beat the same wild rhythm.

“Don’t touch me!” Zoey cries, gripping my wrist in an attempt to pry me off her, but I stand my ground.

“Enough! I won’t have you fighting over this.”

“Too late,” she snarls, digging her fingernails into me.

Peering up at Saint from under my lashes, I end this once and for all. “I won’t have you fighting over this because Zoey, I agree with you.”

“What?” both Zoey and Saint gasp at the same time.

When I think it’s safe, I slowly lower my arms, but stay rooted between them. “Pavel, is there any way you could get us some passports?”

Saint is stunned by my actions.

“Yes, I know a guy. I think I could manage it,” he replies calmly. I was stupid not to think of this sooner. But there’s a reason for it.

My eyes never leave Saint’s. “Good. Can you call him? We’ll need them before this meeting takes place because I don’t trust Alek. If he gets wind of the fact we don’t need him anymore, he will have no qualms about feeding us to the sharks.”

“What are you doing?” Saint asks, his cheeks turning a deep crimson.

“Making a better plan,” I retort without pause. “You said we need Alek to get the fuck out of Russia. Well now, we don’t.”

“For once, I agree with her.” Zoey’s camaraderie means nothing to me because I only want the approval of one person.

“It’s not that simple,” Saint states heatedly.

“Why not?” I challenge because this darkness he has, it will ruin him. But I’ll die fighting before that happens.

“You know why.” His nostrils flare as he breathes steadily.

“I know, but is it worth dying over? Because that’s what’ll happen. If we go to that drop-off, we will die. Is that what you want?”

I am walking a very dangerous line, but when haven’t I?

“Not for you, I don’t.”

I turn my cheek because his honesty has slapped me. “So all of this was for nothing? Is that what you’re telling me?”

Silence. And the silence enrages me.

“I once told you, you were a coward; do you remember?” This is going to go one of two ways—bad or fucking diabolical.

Welcome to the madness.

Saint’s chest rises and falls slowly. A sure sign he is going to explode. It’s not a deterrent, however.

“I said do…you…remember?” My pause grates him raw. He clenches his jaw, eyes ablaze.
