Page 71 of Forever My Saint

Saint is so matter of fact, it scares me. Although he’s doing the smart thing, it doesn’t mean it’s the right way. By doing this, Oscar will never pay for what he did, and that doesn’t sit right with me. I can only imagine how it makes Saint feel.

Alek is also on the same page. “I didn’t think you’d give up and roll over like a dog.”

Saint’s fists curl as his body begins to tremble in rage. When he takes a step forward, I instantly clutch his fist, rubbing my thumb along his knuckles. Fighting won’t solve anything. Alek’s astute eyes drop to our connection. He knows why Saint is doing this. It’s for me.

“I’m not giving up. I just know when the odds aren’t in my favor. You should too.”

Alek straightens in his seat, his hard exterior refusing to budge. “Very well then. I will send Oscar your regards.”

Thatbastard. How dare he. He is baiting Saint. I can only hope he doesn’t take it.

When he gently severs our hold and takes a confident step toward Alek, I brace for anything. I am stumbling through this without any idea of how it will end. “As I see it, you owe me. I did spare your miserable life. You kill that motherfucker for me, then our debt is settled.”

Well, I clearly didn’t expect that.

What in the ever-living fuck? Saint has asked Alek to kill Oscar when his hands should spill that monster’s blood.

Guilt swarms me. He’s doing this for me. Giving up his chance of revenge so we can escape together. How is that fair to him? I guess there is no fair in this scenario, so that is a small comfort.

Alek purses his lips as he was not expecting this outcome. Zoey hasn’t spoken up and neither has Ingrid. He’s on his own.

“Okay, I accept. I do this, and we’re even. Once I regain my place, you will leave me alone? You won’t seek revenge for the past?”

Saint nods once, but it’s in vain. There is no way Alek will get out of this unscathed. There are no winners in this situation. Only losers. Alek comes to a slow stand, eyes locked on me. Another wave of guilt drags me under, and I look away.

But this is what I should have done from the very beginning. No matter how wrong it feels.

“Pavel, will you write out a list of everyone you think I should contact? It seems there isn’t a moment to waste.”

Pavel nods, and anyone can see he too feels guilty for leaving Alek to the wolves.

“Thank you, old friend. I will ensure you get everything promised to you.”

Pavel seems surprised that Alek would still deliver on his promise to take care of him and his family, regardless of the fact he has turned his back on him. And that’s the reason I can’t hate Alek.

“If you’ll excuse me, I need some fresh air.” When Ingrid stands, Alek gently places a hand on her shoulder, sitting her back down. “Stay here, ????????????. It’s cold out.”

She does as she’s told.

Alek is expressionless as he exits through the back door.

Once he’s gone, I exhale slowly because I can’t help but feel remorseful. He has a choice to wait, but his pride and honor won’t allow it.

Saint isn’t touched by sentiments. “Can you still organize those passports for us, Pavel?”

Pavel shakes his head to clear the fog from his brain. It seems we’re all, bar Saint, stunned by what just happened. “Yes. It’ll take some time, but my guy can organize everything you need.”

I know this was my idea, but I can’t help but ask, “So going to the consulate is a definite no?”

I am so sick of the lies. I just want things to go back to normal. But we’re way past that.

“And say what?” Saint asks without any judgment. “What story do we give?”

He’s right. I knew this was the case, but why does everything have to be so difficult all the time?

“I’m a fugitive,” he says without pause. “No matter how I got here, and what I was forced to do, I won’t leave this country. I’ll be tried and punished for what I’ve done.”

“He’s right.” Pavel supports Saint’s claims. “For you to leave here, Saint and Willow have to die. You’ll have new identities. We’ll work out a story in case any questions are asked. I’ll make sure my contacts ensure the story checks out. It won’t be cheap however.”
