“Why did you decide to tell the whole town…” I inhale a deep breath because I’m two seconds from losing my shit. “About a date I never agreed to go on with you?”

“I didn’t,” he muses, lifting those perfect lips into a higher form of self-loathing for me because I can’t seem to halt my body from melting into the nearest surface. “Your dad announced it. Literally claimed there’d be a summer wedding soon.”

I scoff and avert my eyes from him, just to narrow them in at the back of Dad’s head with a vengeance. That’s not out of character for my only living parent. In fact, he loves to fuck with everyone.

Voted class clown and kept the crown ever since.

“I hope he doesn’t think I’m giving him any more of my pies,” I mumble through clenched teeth.

“You’re what?”

“Pies. The whole town is buttering me up for tutoring you with sessions you don’t need.”

“I need them,” he counters simply. “I’m stackin’ up on notes that’ll get you to fall head over heels in love with me.”

“You don’t know the language.”

“Are they hieroglyphics? Latin? If I need to learn a new language to snag your attention and win it, I’ll go download Rosetta Stone right now.”

“You’re seriously impossible, Asher. Please go bother someone else. Do you have an ongoing bet with your friends for this date or something?”

“What is this, an overly done screenplay of a ‘90s movie?”

“You tell me.”

“I have been telling you, but you won’t get over the fact that I like you.”

“Why?”

“The list of reasons why I don’t is much shorter. Wanna roll with that?”

“Yes.” I steer my focus back to him because it’ll only get me to not want to date him even more. “Knock yourself out.”

He shrugs. “Alright.” Turning his broad frame, his thigh brushes against mine. “I don’t like that you wore a crop top last month and didn’t seem to notice that you had everyone drooling over you that day. I also don’t appreciate that you’re not into football, only for the simple fact that I can’t win you over with my skills. I’d love to fucking see you in the stands watching me, so that when I’m done, I can take you home and work out another set of aggression I seem to have.”

I blink through the forming blush creeping up the sides of my face. “You’re a pig.”

“Oink, oink.” This dude actually winks at me. “I also don’t enjoy how you think you’re somehow less or unworthy of my attention, when clearly, you’re so much more. You’re fucking gorgeous, and I don’t like how you don’t believe me when I say I’ve wanted you to be mine since we were fucking children.”

“We dated for two weeks. It didn’t work out.”

“We were eight.”

“I was nine.”

“I know.” He runs his hand and forearm down the back of my chair and leans closer. “I really like that you’re older than me. Seven months, two weeks, and I think four days. You never invited me to any of your birthday parties.”

“Because they were girl birthday parties.”

“Not your sixteenth.”

I roll my eyes. “That was Amanda’s bright idea to invite dudes to my birthday party. Dad was pissed.”

“You got me on some sort of blacklist with your friends because I was not one of those dudes.”

“Ask Amanda.”

“I’m asking you.”
