Trick Play 7

ASHER

Ididn’tknowthat kissing Magnolia would’ve made her come with me anywhere, if I’m being honest. In fact, when she agreed without a smartass remark, I had to replay the moment over and over in my head.

So, when I took her home and bullshitted with Jimmy, she must’ve thought long enough in her bedroom about how she was going to torture me some more because the clothes she changed into made me immediately hard, and keeping my hands off her—which was the plan because I didn’t want to push her too much and freak her out—quickly faded.

With tight blue jeans, a white Northview tee that barely covers the waist of said pants, and a brown leather jacket, Magnolia looks good and sexy enough to fucking eat.

Literally and metaphorically.

“I’m ready,” she exclaims, walking over to her dad, who’s watching ESPN highlights, and pressing a kiss on the top of his head. “I won’t be home late.”

Jimmy’s matching hazel eyes flick to mine. “I want her home by one.”

I nod. “Of course.”

“In the door.”

“Right.”

“Not drunk or high or—”

“Dad,” Magnolia warns. “Don’t get on him. This isn’t a date.” My brow immediately goes up and, technically, it’s not. However, I don’t like the fact that she mentioned it. “Ready?”

She’s looking expectedly up at me now and I nod.

Sure, it’s not a date.

But it won’t mean there won’t be one by the end of the night.

The Yates’ mansion—the only one in Chesterfield—is already full of fucking kids. Some are even on the roof that leads out from the master bedroom window with red solo cups in their hands, two-stepping to Boot Scootin’ Boogie by Brooks and Dunn with the rest of them on the actual ground. There’s a large pool that is easily accessible to jump in—I’d know because I’ve done it—and Tiki torch lights are lit around the whole backyard.

Plucking a can of Coke for Magnolia, I hand it over to her and let her soak in the madness that is a bunch of hillbillies who are bored and looking for a reason to party.

“It’s so…loud,” Magnolia says at my side, cracking her can open. “I don’t remember it being so loud.”

“Because you haven’t been here since sophomore year,” I profess. Harrison didn’t like taking her to parties because he didn’t want to watch her. He wanted to get wasted and flirt all night long. I immediately feel Magnolia’s eyes on me—literally could feel them a football field away—and I return the look. “What?”

“Do you always know where I am? I can’t seem to go anywhere or not go anywhere and you’d know.”

I run my hand down my mouth to keep her from noticing my stupid grin. “You could say you were a person of interest.”

Magnolia bumps me with her elbow and shakes her head, returning her attention back to the party. “You’re something else.”

“I’d like to be your something else, Mags. You can call it whatever you want.”

“Don’t you think you deserve something more?”

“Like what?”

She lifts her shoulders underneath her leather coat. “A girlfriend. Someone that’s proud to call you her boyfriend.”

Circling around her body, I regard all the beauty of a woman who doesn’t seem to begin to understand how much I want this.

That with her.

“I would,” I reply, watching her stare up at me. “But there’s only one girl I want that from.”
