Under Her Heel 9

Keava

“Ow!”Icovermy eyes with my hand, blocking out the sun that is burning my retinas and causing my head to pound. “Oh, what happened!”

“Here!” Brax hands me a couple pills, while Jace holds a glass of water out. Gratefully, I take them, swallowing the pills and then drinking all the water.

“What? Why?” My mind is a haze of confusion. I can’t remember anything after talking to Jace in the kitchen. “Can one of you please shut the curtains? This must be a form of torture.”

“Easy!” Jace stops me from sitting up too fast. “Someone got to your drink last night. We spent the night watching over you, making sure you were okay.”

“I...I don’t remember anything.” I look between the two of them, trying to focus but my head would rather not focus on anything other than the back of my eyelids. Jolting upright, I hold my head, crying out in pain.

Jace reaches out, but I bat his hand away. “Why in hell am I in a sleepshirt?” I glare between them. We never went past holding hands and a peck on the cheek as kids. If they saw me in all my natural glory for the first time and I was passed out, I am going to be pissed.

“No! Not us! Missy came in and helped you,” the boys stumble over each other to reassure me.

Crossing my arms, I glare at them. “O-kay!” I draw out the word, letting them know that I don’t believe them. “Um, can you guys give me a few minutes?” I really have to pee and brush my teeth, maybe take a shower.

“Nope. Not till we know you are over the effects of whatever was in your drink,” Jace says, arms crossed with his ‘I don’t care what you say, my word is final’ look—the same one he had six years ago, but now with his adult voice and body, well my panties might not be dry anymore.

Rolling my eyes, which instantly causes me to wail in pain, I glare at him. “Fine. Can you at least turn around so I can get up?”

Brax, our hothead, is the one to grab my hand and kiss the knuckles. “Sunshine, could you let us baby you for today? Seeing you so out of it scared us.”

“What did I do? What happened?” Every story of date rape, of kids being high and doing dangerous or scandalous things races through my mind. I don’t feel like anything was done to me, well other than drugging me.

“No, we found you in time,” Brax says, rubbing the back of my hand with his finger in slow circles.

“Wait, how do I know you didn’t drug me?” I glare at them, not really thinking they did.

A scoff has me turning to look at Jace, “As if! For one, we don’t need to drug a girl to spend time with us. And as great as it is seeing you, you’re not worth a felony.”

“Fair,” I say, then realize that I really, really need to get up. “Um, so I kinda…” my voice trails off. Man this is embarrassing. I can feel my cheeks heating, but before I can say anymore, Jace is pulling the covers back, scooping me into his arms, and walking toward the bathroom with sure steps.

Once there, he sets me on my feet, holding my hips until he is sure I have my footing. “When you’re ready, call out and I’ll help you back. If you need help, we are here.”

Cheeks still warm, I nod my head and wait for him to back up and shut the door. Looking into the mirror, I study my reflection. I don’t look any different, and honestly besides the hangover of death, I don’t feel different. But something in my eyes is different. Some of my trust for humanity is gone, and I might never feel safe in crowds like that again.

Thank God for my boys. Yes, they are my boys and I just have to decide how to tell them that I heard them talking.

Sitting, I finish my business as quickly as I can, before brushing my teeth and running wet fingers through my hair. I won’t win any beauty contests, but I feel better about how I look.

Finished, I open the door to see Jace jumping up from the dining chair that they must have dragged into the room and quickly comes over to help me.

“Thanks.” I smile up at him shyly.

“No problem. You okay walking?” he asks, his hand holding mine.

“I think so. At least I’m not dizzy.” I rub my head, “Just the headache from hell.”

“Sorry. I don’t know if you have much experience at parties, but next time, don’t nurse a drink. Either cap it and keep it on you, or set it down and leave it.”

I nod, regretting it instantly. “I thought I was careful.”

“You probably were careful, but it doesn’t take long to spike a drink. Now let’s get you back in bed.” Jace guides me back to bed.

“Now, what would you like for breakfast? I’m not the cook you are but I can handle eggs and toast.” Brax looks at me, his heart in his eyes.
