“Hold up. Shane “the Spider” Murphy knows my name?”

“Well, yeah. We were in some of the same classes.”

“You never talked to me.”

“Um, Evelyn, I never talked to any girls. You were one of the few who never chased me around.”

“You were in choir with me in junior high.”

Shane nods and watches me pack up my books. “I asked Marcus to lunch. Would you like to join us? I think I heard you say you had plans with him.”

“Are you guys dating?” She tilts her head and narrows her eyes.

Shane throws his head back and laughs. “He’s my tutor, and I’ll take anything else he’ll offer.”

“Do you want to go steady?” I ask nervously.

“Don’t sound so old school.” Evie rolls her eyes.

“Sorry, Evie, I am old school.” I laugh and stand up. “Ready when you are.”

Shane looks at his hands and takes off his class ring. “I ran home to get it. I guess I’m old school too.” His cheeks pink up. “You, uh, wanna wear my ring?”

Evie squeals and I feel tears threaten to fall. “Yeah. I do.”

Shane slips it on my middle finger and kisses my hand. “Guess it’s official. You’re mine.”

“And you’re mine.” I kiss him softly.

“C’mon boys, let’s do lunch. My treat.” Evie walks with us and we walk together holding hands.
