Fifty Yard Line 14

Brady

Monday, thesnowhad cleared enough, but classes were still cancelled, so the weekend was extended by one more day. One more day we exhausted each other physically and I knew it was too much. For her, for me, for both of us. I just couldn’t stop, and neither could she. Still, Tuesday was back to reality, and we were giving fiction a decent competition this weekend. I may not have had extra grooves and knobs, but she wasn’t disappointed with my efforts.

“You could just go grab some clothes and come back with me.” I turned off my car and looked over to her. She was in a combination of her clothes and mine since we hadn’t planned on that night leading to any of this.

“I need to study and if I go back to your place, I am only going to study your body and how many ways I can make you sigh.” She smiled at me. “This was the best—”

I shook my head no. “Don’t say it like that. It sounds like it’s over or something. It’s not over. We’re still friends. We’re…more than that…right?”

Her eyes went wide, and she gulped. “Are we? I…don’t know.”

I nodded. “Yes. We are, and you do know. Don’t you?”

My heart was thumping hard in my chest. I had more anxiety about this woman getting out of my car than I had about our upcoming game. A game I really needed to win.

“You said—”

“That was before.” I hated feeling this vulnerable. Hated feeling like she could break my heart, but she could, and she just might based on her expression.

“Before?” she asked.

I gulped. Tried to think of something but blurted out, “Before I knew what you tasted like.”

She blushed so deeply and smiled. She asked, “So…what are we then? Friends with benefits?”

I shook my head no. “More.”

“More?” she asked. I nodded. I was hoping she didn’t need me to say anything else right now because this was already a lot more than I wanted to admit to myself much less her. She looked at me, tucked that lower lip in a moment, then said, “Okay. We can be more.”

I breathed a sigh of relief and reached for her, pulled her toward me and kissed her. Words wanted to fall out of my mouth, but I held them back and said, “Text me?”

She nodded, leaned in, kissed me once more, then got out of my car. I gripped the steering wheel in a real effort to remain there and not chase after her. Once she was out of sight, I went home to find Pricilla at the counter unloading some groceries. She said, “Hey. Brought some of the good stuff from home. How was the snow?”

“Best fucking weekend of my whole life.” I felt like I just won the Super Bowl. She snickered and then laughed as I headed back to my room.

I crawled into my bed and inhaled the scent of Poppy on my pillow. I smiled uncontrollably. I was a wreck. I knew this. I was in love with her. There was no other way of explaining this.

She sent me a text and I called her. “Hey.”

“Hi.” She sounded so far away. “I’m struggling to settle in and concentrate.”

“I told you to come home.” I gulped.

She giggled. “I don’t want to go…oh. You mean there?”

“Yeah.” I didn’t find it funny at all.

The silence was so heavy, and I was about to say something when a knock at my bedroom door sounded and I said, “Priscilla just got in. I’ll uh…yeah. I’ll—”

“Okay.” She hung up.

I got out of my bed and my stupor and opened the door.

Pricilla looked at me and said, “I know I just unloaded two bags of groceries, but I could really go for—”

“Yes.” I nodded. “Let’s go.” I needed to get out of this place. Get my head right. Get my mind back in the game. My dick had run away with my senses long enough.
