Azalea Blooms 12

Lukas

Iwastherewhen Azalea told Sergio she no longer wanted to play golf. She must have believed he would berate her and make her feel bad for quitting, but he simply told her he wasn’t surprised. She didn’t give it enough effort.

I took her home and she cried on my chest. I couldn’t believe someone could talk to their kid the way her father had spoken to her. I’d wanted to jump in and say something multiple times, but I bit my tongue. I wouldn’t make it any more complicated for her.

But now that Zales wasn’t playing golf anymore, she could spend her time at my hockey games and she did. Four rows up and with my jersey on. I could hear her cheer from the ice each time I did something good in a game. Cami always attended with her. After we caught Taz sneaking out of her hotel room that night, things had gotten better between them.

Azalea and I guessed they were boning, but they wouldn’t say anything to anyone. And we would have almost believed it had she not been wearing Taz’s jersey number for every game.

All my dreams came true this year. We won the frozen four and I got drafted to play for one of the best hockey teams in the NHL. When I told Zales she was thrilled for me.

That very night I asked her to pack up her life and come with me. I needed my girl by my side. We’ve had some misunderstandings along the way but we always seemed to work them out. I knew things weren’t perfect, but they felt like it to me. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Perseverance paid off.

As I sat here and looked down at Zales laying on my lap, I couldn’t help but smile. She’d fallen asleep shortly after I turned on the movie. She tended to do that when I rubbed her back.

Soft snores slipped from between her lips, and I chuckled thinking about the last time I mentioned her snoring.

Azalea still hadn’t told me she loved me, but I knew she did. I’d wait for her to tell me. She moved a little slower than I did, but after three years I thought a few more wouldn’t kill me.

I told her on a regular basis. Some days she was still hesitant about the whole idea, but I could normally convince her otherwise.

Things were how they always were between us—easy. Some nights we sat in pajamas and ate ice cream. Some nights I took her out for dinner. Other nights we spent the whole time inside getting reacquainted with each other, over and over again.

Tomorrow was moving day. I looked around her apartment at the moving boxes. She was moving with me. I still didn’t have the words to adequately express how I felt about it. This was just another step in our journey.

My stuff was packed in boxes right beside Azaleas because shortly after we got back from spring break I moved in with her.

Not that it was anything unusual because I spent more time here than I spent at The Ice Drop anyhow. I was over the parties. Didn’t want to go when I could spend the evenings with Azalea.

I ran my hand through her hair and she started to wake up. “Come on, Zales. Let’s get to bed. Big day tomorrow.”

I couldn’t wait to show her our new home. I’d gone out of town the weekend before to do a tour and put down a deposit. It was the perfect size for us…and a few kids. Not that we were there yet, but I definitely wanted them in the future, and I knew she did too.

Only time would tell…
