“The Silversteins were helping with security. They haven’t come back yet.” Holly shifts nervously, her fear palpable with her hearty scent.

“They’ll be okay, lil sis. Let’s worry about you and the others. We have to get out of here. We think that Jarvis is about to blow this place up.” I press my hand to Holly’s back, getting her to run to the suite with the open door.

I spot three unconscious omegas from the nest we found at the Smithsons, and Anita hollers for us from the wardrobe with an access door. She struggles to drag the male omega, and I quickly run in and scoop him up, taking him into the concrete corridor.

“I’m going to go check on the others. Since you can’t get in, they might’ve just locked the door in fear because of the alarms.” I motion to a pile of blankets. “Roll them onto those. It’ll be easier to drag. Save your energy.”

Holly and Anita follow my instructions, and I race from the room to the one next door. I don’t bother checking the doorknob and instead kick my heavy boot over and over until the wood around the knob fissures and cracks, allowing me to yank the handle off. I flick out the lock and shove the door open, the hazy air engulfing me.

A gunshot pops, and a bullet hits the wall behind me. I jump out of the way, shielding myself from a spray of gunfire. Several soldiers stand with gas masks and protective gear near the balcony, loading all the unconscious omegas.

Jarvis wouldn’t risk their lives. He wants them for himself.

But I can’t fight the soldiers alone. My head pounds with a throbbing headache.

I make a tough decision, one that Kinsey could possibly hate me over. But what am I going to do? I’m one man. Our palace is under attack because of our fucking idiotic father, setting us up even in death.

My priority is to get Holly and Kinsey to safety. Our territory won’t survive this without us. It’s hard to abandon our security and soldiers, but I have to trust that I’ve trained them well. We’re one of the only pack leaders that immerse themselves and fight alongside their people.

Rushing back to Holly and Anita, I slam and lock the door, shoving a dresser in front of it. I push the bed over next and block a clear path to the wardrobe. I catch up with Holly in the corridor, scooping up two of the omegas, carrying them on each of my shoulders. I drag two more on the blankets, allowing Holly and Anita to grab the final one.

The floor rumbles, shaking the corridor, but it doesn’t feel close enough to worry me. It’s a warning explosion—one to send us into a panic.

“Move faster!” I holler, craning to look at Holly and Anita. “Move!”

All I can think about is losing everything.

What if Rommel was right? What if Kinsey learns how weak we might truly be?

From the open balcony, I stare at the smoke wafting from the horizon. The war goes on without us, but my people won’t bow to another authority. Our allies send in reinforcements, pushing Jarvis’s army out as we speak. My fears were unwarranted, and I shouldn’t have doubted our capabilities. We don’t have to do everything ourselves. Giving responsibility and power across other packs makes us stronger as a territory. It also allows me to breathe, knowing no one will find us here, in the home of my mom’s pack. Kinsey rests, her exhaustion getting the best of her. I’m just so thankful we can take care of her now.

My phone buzzes from my pocket.

Asshole Bro: All good?

Me: Kinsey’s asleep. She collected all the pillows, blankets, towels, and our spare clothes. She’s getting close.

Asshole Bro: She can have whatever she wants. Can you meet me in the hall in five? I don’t want to wake her. She needs to rest.

Me: Glad we agree. I’d fuck you up if you disturbed her.

Asshole Bro: You could try.

A soft whine sounds from Kinsey’s nest, her blanket fort now a mansion with everything she could get her hands on that smelled like us. It fucks with my head that I couldn’t give her more, so I’ve been scavenging the place and wearing everything I can, leaving my scent. My brothers are going to bust a nut when they see how Kinsey literally stole everything of theirs we had packed in our emergency bags in the garage. I don’t think it’ll ever be enough. I’ve seen an omega nesting before, but it was nothing like this. I think her taking suppressant pills will guarantee one helluva heat. She’s going to want to fuck me for days, and I’ll gladly abide even if I lose my cock in the process.

Strolling to the mass of blankets shielding her from the rest of her new room, I squat down and peek inside. Kinsey’s damp hair sticks to her glistening cheeks. My balls throb, catching her stroke herself in her sleep, and if my phone didn’t buzz again, I’d squeeze my big ass in with her to give her relief.

Asshole Bro: We’re outside. I hope your head is clear enough to double-check my plans.

I glower at the screen without responding.

Pinching my thigh hard enough to get myself to focus, I stand up and jog across the room. I fling the door open, expecting to see all my brothers, but Beckett stands beside Wilder. The second I’m within their space, I growl and shove Beckett away. If he even gets a hint of Kinsey’s scent, I’ll punch him. I suddenly want him nowhere near her.

Wilder hooks his arm across my throat, winding me as he yanks me away. “Calm the fuck down. I know it’s fucking hard but keep your shit together.”

“He’s too fucking close to her,” I snap, growling again. “She needs rest. If she even catches a breath of him, she’ll panic. Her body’s preparing. I won’t let anything fucking ruin it. She’s been through enough.”
