New Reign

Arseniodragsmeaway, cornering me as the medical team floods into the room once more. I peek over his shoulder, spotting Wilder rushing our way. Desmond, Enzo, and Holly follow behind, not chasing after him. My stare locks on Holly’s, and she pushes past Desmond to come to my side. I wiggle until Arsenio puts me on my feet, and Holly wraps her arms around me in the tightest hug. She’s just as shook up as I am about everything. I’m sure she wants to see the king dead too.

“Get him stabilized so we can have him declare an heir to the throne immediately,” Wilder commands, standing at the end of the bed as he watches the team work on his father.

“Yes, Your Majesty. We’ll do what we can.” The surgeon does something I can’t see, and the machines kick off before they start beeping again. “He’s lost a lot of blood. We are doing what we can, but unless one of you donates, he might not make it.”

“Fuck no. I’m not doing anything for him after he set this shit up.” Enzo crosses his arms over his chest, glowering at Wilder.

“It has to be you. You’re the only match, brother.” Wilder locks his hand around Enzo’s elbow, tugging him closer. “Don’t fight us over this. We will hold you down.”

Oh shit.

“Son?” King Winston’s soft voice murmurs through the air, drawing my attention away from the impending fight between Enzo and Wilder. “My heir. I need you.”

Enzo balls his hands, his muscles rippling and cording on his arms. “You were trying to renounce me as your son and heir to the throne. You gave the love of my life to an enemy pack because you’re bitter and petty. A fucking coward. You should’ve thought about that, Dad. I’m not doing fucking anything for you.”

“Son? Please. Don’t let me die. Our legacy will end.” King Winston’s head lolls, his eyes rolling.

“Make your decision, prince. We’re out of time.” The surgeon stares at Enzo.

“You hear that, father? If you want help, you must declare one of us as Gilded Sands’ new king. Your staff here will bear witness, and you will sign the testament.” Wilder pulls out his phone. He waves it at King Winston while Desmond steps forward, pulling out a folded piece of paper from his jacket.

“I’ll do anything.” The king opens and closes his mouth, his voice weak and his eyes struggling to remain open. “We have faced many challenges as a family, but this was my greatest mistake. I declare you, Prince Wilder, as my next in line and Gilded Sands’ new king.”

“You must declare Kinsey as our omega, too.” Wilder sets a pen in King Winston’s hand, curling his fingers around it.

“I declare Kinsey as your omega.” King Winston scribbles slowly across the paper as Wilder records everything as the medical staff bears witness. “I officially agree to retire and renounce my power of the throne and myself as leader of the Gilded Sands Pack.”

Wilder snatches the pen away and turns to Enzo. “It’s done. Do what you have to and don’t argue. This is what we have been waiting for, brother. Don’t let me down. Don’t let our pack down because of your anger.”

I slowly step forward, sliding my fingers through Enzo’s to squeeze his hand. He looks at me for the first time since he re-entered the room, and I reach up and caress my fingers across his cheek and down his neck, rubbing his skin slowly, gently, just leaving my scent behind to help calm him down.

“I will stand beside you through everything. This is what we need, Enzo. Your father will have the life he deserves. I promise.” I squeeze his hand again, watching as he finally relents and allows the medical staff to do as they need to perform a blood transfusion on the king.

Everything happens in a blur as Enzo shuts down, keeping his eyes closed and ignoring everything that happens. He wants to kill his father, not save him, and the scent of his anger runs hot and spicy the longer we sit here.

“We will sedate him now, King Wilder.” The surgeon clears his throat and motions to Wilder’s father. “It would be best if he had time to rest. I suggest only one of you stays so he remains calm.”

Enzo scoops me up, not waiting to hear his brother’s response. “Good luck with that. I’m taking our girl out of here.”

“Take Holly too. Don’t leave the premises. We have to make the formal arrangements for Wilder’s coronation and his declaration of our shared ruling.” Desmond touches my cheek, strolling with us for just another moment longer. “I’m sure word will get out soon enough, and we need to be ready.”

“Yeah, okay. What the fuck ever. I don’t care anymore.” Enzo swivels and holds his hand up to Holly.

“You should, brother. This is everything we wanted and needed for our pack. We can’t fuck this up.” Wilder remains by King Winston’s side... I guess he’s not really King Winston anymore. He doesn’t deserve such a title any longer.

“We already have. Our father should be dead. You know he’s going to go back on his word.” Enzo rubs his lips together. “So be prepared when he does. He’s a dead man. That’s a promise.”

I peek over my shoulder at Wilder, Desmond, and Arsenio. Enzo is right about that. I’ll never feel safe as long as that man lives. We might not be able to do it now, but his reign is over. He will die, even if it has to be by my hands.

I will never allow another alpha to ruin my life again.

Now that’s my promise to my pack. To me.

This territory is ours.
