I never imagined I would be sitting in the back of an armored car, stuffing my face with meat and cheese, feeling horny as fuck yet lighthearted, a bit scared too because of the whole situation, but at least it’s a bit entertaining. Hearing my guys’ banter lifts my spirits, and I can’t wait to just get home. They’re doing their best to take care of me while also taking care of our territory and region. Some people might think they’re villains because of how they are taking over with force, but they’re truly my heroes.
“Enzo says it’s all clear. They’re going in now. We should be able to get in and out without a problem,” Wilder says, standing hunched over in the walkway, staring at the windshield instead of taking a seat. I can tell he doesn’t want to be far from me.
“Don’t fucking say that shit. You’re going to jinx us.” Arsenio smacks the wheel, the sound loud enough to bounce through the cargo area.
“I don’t believe in jinxing anything. Our strategy is solid. Have some faith in us, brother.” Wilder twists and looks at me. “Right, Kinsey?”
I dip my chin in affirmation, continuing to stuff my face. Now that I started eating, I can’t stop. I hadn’t realized how hungry I really was. “Mmmhmm.”
“Over there. Stop at the end of the block. There’s an orchard on the backside of the property. She’s going to meet us there.” Wilder shifts on his boots, patting down his holsters and jeans, double-checking his weapons.
The armored car comes to a stop, jolting me into the partition wall. Wilder’s scent wafts through the cargo area, its vetiver and woods fragrance like a warm blanket as it drifts over me. I squeeze my legs together, fidgeting and bouncing my feet.
“I want you to behave for Arsenio. Try not to seduce him. We need him ready to drive.” Wilder rustles his fingers through my hair again, stroking his palm over my cheek and down to squeeze my shoulder. “I won’t be long, okay?”
“You better not be.” My stomach twists again, my nerves getting the best of me.
“We can watch them from here, sugar. If you’re up to it.” Arsenio calls my attention to where he sits in the driver’s seat. “Maybe you can eat that dessert.”
I push to my feet, hugging Wilder from behind, strolling with him as he heads to the passenger side, choosing to exit through the front instead of the back. He kisses me before opening it, and I have to force myself to stay in place instead of following him. Because I don’t want him to go.
It’s bad enough that Enzo and Desmond aren’t here either.
“Come on, Kinsey. You can sit on my lap.” Arsenio wiggles his fingers at me, silently encouraging me to come closer.
I do as he asks and slide onto his lap, feeling his hard desire beneath my ass. I can’t stop myself from rolling my hips and wiggling, clutching onto the steering wheel as his pheromones set me off.
I train my gaze out the windshield, my mind and body separate as I struggle to remain in control. Wilder aims his gun at the ground, cautiously treading his way toward the orchard.
Arsenio’s phone chirps and he pulls it out.
Baby Brother: Abort mission. Jarvis is with the omega. We got a visual. She’s been compromised.
“Oh, no.” Without thinking, I slam my palm to the horn, sending it blaring through the air.
Wilder jerks his attention in my direction, and I wave my arms at him, hoping he sees me. Spinning around, he turns back toward the orchard, raising his gun.
He fires, but several more pops blast through the air.
Wilder drops to his knees before landing face-first on the ground. Swearing, Arsenio sides me off him and grabs his gun from its holster.
I scream, watching as a man leads an omega through the trees by her hair. He waves his gun, aiming it at our vehicle.
“Arsenio, stop.” I grab him before he can rush to Wilder.
The man aims the gun at us and shoots.
He shoots again and again.
I don’t move for my spot. I don’t duck as the bullets plink off the windshield.
I can’t take my eyes off Wilder. He doesn’t get up. He doesn’t move.
My heart shatters.
It feels as if my world is over.
