When he was busy again with the desk, whatever he was finding or not finding, she dared to try again. Every touch was a relief, a hit of a drug she shouldn’t have even messed with. This time she ran a finger down the back of his tight curls and along his neck. He shivered under the touch before turning to face her.

“Can I help you?”

“Nope just having some fun before we run off to slaughter the last remaining members of my family.” She’d said it far too apathetically. The calmness in her voice even startled her.

“Well, knock it off.” He shoved her hand from the armrest.

“Right. I forgot you were captain of the ‘no fun brigade.’ How silly of me.”

Shelby’s half growl, half sigh managed to vibrate throughout the room. It trembled all through Ace and her shared soul. This playfulness was too tempting for her to pass up. She allowed him two heartbeats before daring to run her hand down his spine.

Her hand lifted, her hair caught in a breeze she did not create, and Shelby was whirling on her. His impressive height towered over her as he planted his arms on either side of the chair, the slice of orange in his eyes flashing a darker pink shade.

“Would you listen to me for once?” Shelby seethed through gritted teeth.

A slow strangled inhale worked its way down Ace’s throat as her eyes danced between that spark in his and the fullness of his lips. Gods, all she needed to do was close two inches of space. She swore her heart skipped a beat.

Maybe he’d do it first.

He hovered there waiting for an answer.

“I’m listening now,” she said quietly.

Long lashes lightly touched against his cheeks as Shelby squeezed his eyes shut. The chair groaned as his fingers curled into the armrests.

“You are not.”

“How am I not?” She couldn’t quit looking at his lips. The image of his mouth on hers played again and again in her mind. “I’m pinned under you. Quiet as a mouse.”

He leaned down, eyes still closed, until their noses brushed. A breath caught in her chest.

“Whatever you are thinking. Stop. It.”

Damn it.

He pinned her with his gorgeous hazel eyes. The tip of his nose traced a line against hers before he pulled away only enough to watch her lips part as she finally exhaled.

“You are an engaged woman,” he reminded her.

And there it was.

“I know.” She hated how she couldn’t stop thinking about him. Truly every cell in her body loathed the way she desired him. Still, it could not be stopped. If only she could take those feelings and shove them away in some box she could bury.

“You don’t feel the way you feel around me when you are with Rehan. I’ve noticed.”

“Maybe it’s just your own inflated ego you’ve felt.”

“No.” A slow smile lifted his cheeks. “No, this is different. This is all you.”

Ace squirmed lower in the chair. There was no way to escape the ecstasy of him.

“It cannot be helped,” she finally admitted.

“You needn’t worry.” The words were spoken practically against her lips. It was an almost kiss. A ghost of what could have been. A past decision that would forever haunt her in her married life.

“Why is that?”

“Because I would not stoop so low as to have relations with an engaged woman. Not even a kiss in private.”
