“Ambrose.”

“Yes?” She hated the way her voice hitched with hope. What was she even hoping for? A goodnight kiss? Whatever desire she had for that needed to burn into ash or bury itself so deeply she never thought of it again.

“That other guy, Ephram…”

He’d learned his name?

“What about him?” She turned to give him her full attention.

“Do you like him?”

Well, she hadn’t expected that. “I do.” Ephram had been the man who had healed her heart. She couldn’t discard him so quickly.

“So you can see him as your king?”

“Bee.” She had to play her part. There was no way he would accept Ephram for who and what he was. “I barely know him.”

She waited for the guilt of her lies to sink into her like everything else had recently. The feeling never came; instead, she felt relief for being able to speak of her feelings for Ephram out loud to someone else.

“Not to sound insensitive but I hope it stays that way, and if it doesn’t, I’ll welcome the competition with open arms.” He smiled softly. “One more question.”

“Is it about another suitor?” She almost laughed.

“No. Not unless I should be worried about the architect.”

She shuddered at the thought of their terrible long conversation. “Not at all.”

“Good. No, I’m more interested in knowing your opinion about the conversation with your sister just now.”

Ambrose still needed time to process that mess of a conversation. Half truths and sugar coated lies no less. Especially when it came from her sister. Still what he asked next shocked her.

“Do you want immortality?”

Ace

“Should we tell them?” Rehan half laughed as he pointed back to the warlocks who’d lost sight of them behind the veil that was Glatton.

Shelby had mused that though to them they looked as if they were only a few steps away, they’d actually been transported to the other side of the city. Warlock magic at its best. All it would take for the warlocks to find them would be to step across Glatton’s city limits thenboom, they’d find the trio again.

“I don’t think there is a way around it,” Shelby grumbled, kicking at the dirt.

“So what’s next?” Ace was hugging her arms around her. She could still picture Shelby’s wings and when he caught her staring she averted her gaze. “Do I just…bleed?”

Wood cracked and crunched as Rehan propped his boot on the rotting log’s edge. He extended his hand, his calloused fingers waiting for her. “We can bleed together.”

At least she wasn’t alone.

You’re never alone,Sylik reminded her.

At least it wasn’t just her and the gods, she corrected with a sigh.

“Do you still want to do this?” Shelby asked.

Her hand hovered in the air. “Do I have a choice?”

“I’m not holding you at knifepoint.”

“You do have a point.” She chuckled. Rehan’s hand still hung there between them, hers only an inch away. He waited patiently for her, not reaching to demand of her, not questioning her as she debated internally. “We made a deal,” she finally said, taking Rehan’s hand and stepping over the log.
