“Yes, I am. Dr. Taylor needs a nurse, and I need a change.”

“I see. You’re a little like Ally was, I’m sensing. A little lost, a little lonely, and a little in need of something new.”

“Yes,” I whisper, nervous to admit that to her.

“I’m glad my home will help in your fresh start, Melanie dear. Ally will take care of everything for you when you get there, but maybe if you’re up for it one day, I could pop in on you and have some tea out on the porch.”

“I’d love that. Thank you, Dottie.”

“I’ll even bring along a blueberry pie and fill you in on the gossip and runaround of the town.”

Laughing, I shake my head, smiling. She’s so cute. “Sounds perfect.” I’ve been dying to try her famous pie ever since Ally started bragging about it.

“Good. Now, I have to get back to my grandbabies, but call again if you need anything.”

“I will, thank you. ‘Night, Dottie.”

“Goodnight, dearie.”

Hanging up, I hold my face in my hands. My cheeks hurt from smiling so wide.

I can’t believe I’m doing this. I’m seriously going to move to Pine Cove.

My boss’s face was priceless today when I handed her my letter of resignation. I know that she thought I was someone who would never take such a risk, or make such a rash decision as leave an award-winning hospital like that. But I don’t have an attachment to my joborthat hospital anymore. I’m grateful for the experience and knowledge it’s provided me over the past seven years, but I know I’ll thrive as both a nurse, and a person, more in Maine.

Now, these two weeks just need to hurry up, and I need to find a way to tell one of my best friends that I’m moving away.

Maybe I’ll take her out and get her drunk first. And then find her a hot guy to flirt with.

Yup, that might just work.

Chapter 3

“What are you saying?” Ellie asks, narrowing her eyes at me from across the table.

“I’m saying that I resigned from the hospital and am moving to Pine Cove to work for Dr. Taylor. And I’ll be renting Dottie’s cottage.”

“I can’t believe this. Mel, what the fuck?”

“Sorry, El. I know you’ll be alone here now, but–”

“I’m not alone,” she interrupts.

“I didn’t mean it like that. I just meant–”

“I know what you meant,” she quips, I think offended. “Does it suck that my three best friends will all be living hours away from me, and will all be together without me? Yes. But I’ll deal,” she sighs. “I guess I’ll have to start taking my coworkers up on their offers to hang out after work now.” Ellie takes a sip of her margarita and leans back in her chair.

I decided telling her at our favorite Mexican restaurant while we sip smooth, frozen margaritas, was the best option. No one can be mad when delicious margaritas are involved.

“I know you’ve been needing a change, Mel. I just didn’t think you’d be going as far as Maine to find it.”

“There’s just something about that place. That town. When we sat out by the water at Dottie’s last summer, I hadn’t ever felt so at ease, or relaxed before. And I haven’t felt that way since.”

“I understand. Don’t worry, Mely, I’m not mad at you or anything. Plus, I’m uh, sort of, maybe, seeing someone?”

“What?!” I sputter, coughing on the sip I was swallowing.

“Yeah, it’s new.” She smiles, shrugging. “I don’t even know if it’ll go anywhere.”
