I’m wearing my skin tight black skinny jeans with rips in the knees and thighs, a tucked in tight black long-sleeved tee, my black suede heeled booties, and a black leather belt with a double ringed gold buckle to cinch my waist. They finish off my look with a few layered thin gold necklaces at various lengths to highlight my boobs.

I don’t see how Alexwon’tlook at my cleavage right away.

“Are you sure I’m not wearing too much black? I know it’s slimming, but…”

“No, you look fucking amazing, Mel!” Ash praises, looking me up and down. “If I were a guy…daaammmnnn honey,” she jokes, catcalling at me like a woman walking by a construction site.

Blowing her a kiss, I grab my leather jacket and purse and head towards the door. “Let’s go, then!”

“Let’s go get you a man!” Ally yells, closing the door behind us as we bound down the stairs to her car.

Opening the door to The Rusty Anchor, I feel like all eyes turn towards us as we breeze inside. And with two glasses of wine already in me, I can’t help but duck my head slightly and smile. It’s nice to be noticed. I haven’t had men look at me like this in a long time. Probably because I stopped going out when my friends started moving away, but still, it’s nice.

“Good thing we’re happily taken,” Ally says, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “Otherwise this hurricane of testosterone we’re causing would be aimed right at us.”

“You still like it because it gets Jake mad, and then you have hot sex where he claims you like some cave man,” Ash throws back at her.

“True,” she says through a laugh.

“Guys, please. I’m not getting any hot sex at the moment, and you bragging about it doesn’t help.”

“Oh Mely, don’t worry. By the end of the night, you’ll be in a certain hottie’s bed, screaming out in extasy.”

“Sweet Jesus, oh my god, shut up.” My words all come out fast and jumbled and I turn my head to the left and right to make sure no one we’re passing heard that.

Making our way around the pool tables crowed with people, I slither through bodies and say ‘excuse me’ about ten times before I’m finally on the other side near the bar.

“What the hell was that?” I ask.

“I think they’re having a mini pool tournament or something. I’ve never seen the tables so crowded around before.”

“Good. Mel, that means there’s plenty of men around to make Alex jealous.”

“I don’t play games like that, Ash. You know that. Now,” I start, taking my jacket off, “I’m going to go get the first round.” Pushing my shoulders back, I give them a sly smile.

“Yeah you are, bitch.” Ash laughs, sitting down at the last free table against the far right wall.

Walking up to the bar, I find an empty space just big enough for me to fit into, and wait for Alex to notice me. And as if he can sense my eyes on him, he turns his head, his eyes locking with mine as he pours a drink, my heart beating faster with just that single look. I’m suddenly glad that I had wine before I came here, because facing Alex feels like going into battle, and I need the slight buzz in order to make it out alive.

Bypassing every person trying to flag him down, he walks straight up to me and smiles like he knows I’ve been thinking about him every day this week and couldn’t wait to see him tonight.

“Hey, gorgeous.”

“Hi.” I smile nervously.

“Rosé or whiskey?”

“You remembered.”

“I always remember the order of a beautiful woman.”

My smile quickly fades. Oh, right. Of course he does.

I play with the ends of my hair. “Rosé. And a drink for Ally and Ashley too. Thanks.”

He looks like he wants to say something, but instead just gets to work on our drinks. When I go for my purse to take out money, he shakes his head. “First round is on me.”

I open my mouth to thank him, but then a shrill voice next to me asks, “Can I get special treatment too, Alex?” The girl tucks her hair behind her ear and smiles up at him with sex eyes and pushes her chest out.
