“You did?!” Courtney screams, beaming.

“Tell us everything,” Ash demands, leaning forward.

Sipping my whiskey, I place my glass down and start to twirl a piece of hair around my finger. “It was…”–I sigh, biting my lip–“I can’t even put it into words.”

“Oh shit!” Ash yells, smiling like a fool.

My guards are down right now, and it all spills out – everything we did.

“Oh my god, Mely.” Ally smiles. “So, he kisses like he looks how he’d kiss? Hard, passionate, and wild?”

“Mhmm,” I hum, biting my lip.

Swirling my glass, I watch the whiskey twirl, getting lost in the cyclone with the memory of his lips on mine, his arms holding me up, his fingers digging into my back, and his hot breath across my neck.

I’ve never felt so out of control and so completely free.

“Melanie, hello?” Ally waves her hand in front of my face. “Earth to Melanie,” she sings, drawing my attention.

Looking up, I meet her knowing eyes. “You like him,” she states matter-of-factly.

“I don’t want to.”

“You can’t help who you want, though. And to be honest, you don’t know him. None of us knows the real him.” She shrugs. “Maybe women are how he deals with shit. You don’t know. And maybe he just hasn’t met the right one to set his ass straight. Like you.” She smiles.

“Don’t put that on her,” Ash says. “You can’t ‘fix’ him.”

“I don’t want to ‘fix’ anyone,” I say defensively. “You guys just need to relax. I don’t know what’s happening, and I don’t want to talk about it anymore, okay?”

“Fine,” Ashley sighs, rolling her eyes. “Whatever you say.”

“Don’t pout, Ash.” Courtney laughs. “It’s not a cute look.”

“So, Dara,” I start, trying to change the subject. “Tell me about yourself. I’m sorry that these people feel the need to make me the center of attention tonight.”

“It’s okay.” She laughs. “Well, I’m in school right now and working at the café.”

“What’re you going for?”

“Teaching. I want to teach kindergarten.”

“Oh, wow. I definitely can’t see myself ever trying to corral a room full of rambunctious tiny people full of energy. That sounds worse than treating ornery patients who refuse to cooperate.”

“I love kids.” She smiles, shrugging. “I like being able to help them when they’re young, and teach them to be good and kind from the start. That way it’ll be second nature to them. It’s sad that kindness has to be taught now, but it just gives me the opportunity to be that for a kid who may not get what he or she needs at home.”

“Wow, that’s amazing,” I tell her, stunned that she opened up so quickly. One question about her career and she just lit up.

“Yeah,” she murmurs, sipping her drink.

“And earlier you said Alex wasn’t your type. So, what is your type then?” I ask, tilting my head to the side, studying her.

“Oh, uh, I just meant I’m not interested in him.”

“Good. He’s too old for you,” Ally tells her.

“No he’s not,” she says defensively. “He’s only 8 years older than me.”

“Okay fine, you’re too nice for him then.”
