“But you wanted them to?”

“I guess. I don’t know.”

“If it makes you feel better, no girls loved me either.”

“I highly doubt that.”

“No, really. I was nerdy and weird. All the girls steered clear of me until high school. Then they all tried to love me.” He chuckles. “But I saw through them.”

“You were a nerd?” I ask, ignoring the other crap he was spewing.

“Yeah.” He laughs. “Glasses, superhero shirts, comic books, and a slight studder whenever I was called on in class. I was the whole picture.”

“Oh my god, do you have pictures? I want to see little nerdy Alex. He sounds so cute!”

“And I’m not cute now?”

“No. Now you’re hot. There’s a difference.”

“I’m hot, gorgeous?”

“You know you are, Fonzie.”

“I have a picture I’ll show next time you come over.”

“And when’s that?” I ask, my body heating from just the thought of being with him again.

“Whenever you want, gorgeous. You could come now.”

“I’m not getting out of bed. I’m nice and warm.”

“Mel,” he groans. “Don’t say shit like that.”

“Why not?” I ask innocently, stifling my laugh.

“Because I want to be warm with you.” His smooth words flow over me and a chill runs down my spine.

I want him here, too, but I don’t think he should be. I’m already developing feelings for him, and him being here at night while I’m vulnerable isn’t a good idea.

“I can tell by your pause that you don’t want me there,” he says, and I hear a little twinge in his voice.

“Oh, no, it’s not that,” I start, but he cuts in.

“It’s okay. I know.”

“You know what?”

“You like the bed to yourself more. You were a blanket hog and took up most of the bed last time,” he jokes, playing it off.

“Sure. We’ll go with that,” I say sarcastically.

“What wouldyougo with?” he asks gently.

“Alex. Please,” I whisper. I don’t want to admit anything.

“Do you want me to come over, Mel?” he asks huskily.

“Yes. But you can’t.”
