“Kyle,” I say slowly, making sure he’s listening. “You cheated on me. We lived together, and you cheated on me. I walked in andsawyou with her. There’s no coming back from that.”

“Ellie, come on. I love you. I’m sorry.” He finally says it. Those two words hit me harder than I thought they would. I didn’t actually expect to ever hear him apologize, and the sad part is that he actually sounds sincere.

Tears threaten to fall from my eyes, and I’m forced to sit in the closest chair before I collapse to the floor.

He can’t be doing this to me – rendering me weak in a matter of seconds. I thought we were in love. I thought what we had was good and was going to last. I thought…

No.

I’ve been down this road already, and what I thought doesn’t matter. His apology doesn’t undo what’s already been done.

“You don’t love me, Kyle,” I manage to finally say. “If you did, you never would have betrayed me. You broke my trust. And once it’s gone, you can’t get it back.”

“El–”

“No,” I say firmly. “Saying you’re sorry doesn’t fix anything.”

“Where are you? Are you safe? What about work?”

“That’s none of your concern anymore. I’ve moved on.”

“It’s been two weeks!” he says aggressively. “How could you have moved on already? The entire time I’ve known you, you’ve never gotten over anything that quickly, how could you me?”

“You know what? Fuck you, Kyle.” My voice cracks at the end as tears flow down my cheeks.

Damn it! I didn’t want to cry.

He doesn’t get to make me feel like this any more than he already has.

His admonishing laugh echoes through the phone and I grip it tighter, needing to stay in control.

“I see how it is. You’ve met another man, haven’t you? Is he there now? Should you put him on so I can tell him how you like it?”

“Even if I drew a map and told you what to do, you’d still be clueless.”

“Is that so? Maybe you should talk to Julie. It’s not like I looked elsewhere because you kept me satisfied.”

My heart squeezes in my chest. Did he just say that?

He’s never been cruel before.

“Did you call me to tell me that? Make your infidelity my fault? Because that’s bullshit and I don’t need it. I don’t need you.”

“I’m sorry,” he says. “I crossed the line.”

“Yes. You did,” I fire back, royally pissed.

“Tell me where you are,” he says gently.

“No, Kyle. I’m nowhere near New Jersey, and I’m not coming back.”

“Are you in Florida with your parents?”

“Don’t call me again. This conversation has been pointless and has only solidified what I already knew. I’ve moved on, and now you need to.”

Just as I finish my little speech, the fire alarm starts beeping, and I jump up out of the chair.

“Shit!”
