I grinned to myself.Sometimes it makes it easier to hunt.I thought of Greg.
Humans are odd.
Without a doubt.
I headed to the kitchen to grab some breakfast. The other wolves were starting their day but for once the conversation didn’t lull when I walked in.
‘Who ate all the ham?’ Mrs Dawes asked the room at large, her hands on hips, her tone accusatory. ‘That was for sandwiches for lunch!’
I held my hand up. ‘Sorry. I gave it to our unicorn.’
Silence fell. Mrs Dawes broke it. ‘We have a unicorn?’ She sounded excited.
I grinned. ‘Yes, his name is Ares and he’s decided to live in our grounds. He likes raw meat. I was improvising yesterday.’
‘You named the unicorn after the God of War?’
I shook my head. ‘He was already named that. I rescued him from a black tourney.’ I said it casually and looked around the room. No Elena. Noah tensed at the mention of the black tourney and met my eyes. ‘Later,’ I mouthed to him. He deserved to know what had gone down.
Archie let out a low whistle. ‘You rescued him from a black tourney? Aren’t you worried about Ghost tracking you down in retribution?’
I considered it. ‘Not really. I’m friends with Bastion, and he’s scarier. I reckon Ghost will leave me alone.’
‘You’re friends with Bastion?’ David said incredulously. ‘The three-hundred-year-old murderous assassin?’
‘He’s got a great skincare regime,’ I quipped. I dug into a massive bowl of cereal. ‘Archie,’ I said between mouthfuls, ‘Amber DeLea is coming to see you. Make sure you’re available around 10am. Has anyone seen Elena?’ I asked loudly.
There were lots of headshakes then conversation around me resumed. Hmm.
‘She’s a late riser,’ Archie commented. ‘She often goes late to Black Park to run.’
‘Alone?’
‘Yeah, mostly.’
‘We’re supposed to go in pairs,’ I pointed out.
‘We all need alone time now and again. She’ll show up later. She’s a freelance journalist, so she can make her own hours.’
‘I didn’t know she was a journalist.’
‘Yeah. She got into it when her brother died.’
‘What happened to her brother?’
‘He died.’
‘Thanks,’ I said drily. ‘I’d gathered that.’
Archie shrugged. ‘I don’t know more than that.’
‘You dated for how long?’ I muttered. ‘It’s a wonder she didn’t dump you first.’
He coloured slightly. ‘I’m rich and adorable.’
I snorted. ‘I don’t think anyone has ever called you adorable.’
‘You’re right. I’m manly and fierce. Kittens are adorable.’
