Page 4 of When We Break

It sounds like a confession, and I’d lie to say it doesn’t affect me.

“I missed you too…”

Her eyes come to me, unfocused and vacant, a twisted smile creasing her lips.

“It hurt…” she says, and I want to believe it is her lust talking, but something inside me tells me that it’s more.

Her sad smile breaks my heart.

“But it hurt good…” she says. “I’ve never felt something more beautiful. More profound and significant––”

She stops abruptly and doesn’t want to continue.

Instead, she brings her eyes to mine, her fingers fanned over my cheek, and looks at me as if being physically connected has brought her some revelation.

“I won’t disappoint you…” she says, bringing me to an unexpected stop.

Tears cling to her lashes, her emotions dancing in her eyes.

I don’t know what she has in mind, and I’m not so sure she knows what she has in mind.

I move again while she shuts her eyes, hiding everything I wanted to see.

Cupping the back of her neck, I bring her close to me and murmur in her ear.

“I won’t disappoint you either if you end up sticking with me.”
