Page 51 of When We Live

And Alejandro went away, talking to that woman. And Francisco went away, and I started to wonder.

And Kai seemed detached as he always is in public when people socialize around us, the lines are blurred, and we live freely, untethered to each other.

And then Alejandro happened.

And my heart becomes a blob of quiet desperation again.

Alejandro… He didn't feel like a stranger to me. Not at all. And I didn’t feel like some nice way to spend the evening for him.

We reconnected quickly as if we’d never been away from each other. He always successfully ignores whatever messes with our story, briefly separating us.

Kai lacks that ability. With him, it’s always peaks and valleys.

He lets me fall away when we’re away and drags me back to him when we’re together.

With him, it’s like breaking up every other hour.

Sadly, I think we do. We do break up.

So with Kai is rinse and repeat, not because it’s working, but because we always start from scratch.

That hasn’t been the case with Alejandro.

We were too hot and took things too far, and we were careless and didn’t care if someone could see us. His ex-sister-in-law got a glimpse of us, and that wasn’t a problem.

The issue was Roman Cardenas, the man who’d had his eyes on me, probably from the beginning.

How could I not see that coming?

Because… I had ignored the details.

And then everything began to crumble.

And maybe things would’ve been all right had Roman not had that crazy idea to invite them to be a part of it.

He did it on purpose.

He said I’d gotten my answer. I guess he did us all a service.

The ending was tragic. Although a part of it was strangely good. I needed him to fuck my brains out and help me chill.

Bring me back to my default settings.

Help me become more pragmatic and be in control.

Truth be told, I hate being pragmatic all the time. But I resent not having control.

So in a way, I benefited a lot from that experience, not to mention the money transferred into my account.

Unfortunately… It all took a turn for the worse when they all stepped out and left me there. I couldn’t foresee that.

I thought they’d wait for me, and it never happened. They pulled away from me faster than I could pull away from them.

So what will happen next?

Are we done?
