Page 7 of When We Live

He rolls his lip under his teeth, pondering the best answer.

“It wasn’t about that…”

And that is all. His eyes move away just as the lights turn green and the cars begin rolling.

I bite back another question, making a mental note to come back to this conversation sometime in the future.

Shortly after, we pull up in front of a restaurant. The evening breeze plays with my hair while I wait for him to check his messages on his phone.

The white Lamborghini is here. I imagine they are here, but maybe the messages have nothing to do with his friends.

We climb out and, led by the hostess, reach our table moments later.

The terrace is draped in vegetation.

Everywhere I look, I spot layers of colorful flowers and exotic plants.

The lights create a warm atmosphere, and several tables are occupied.

Kai nudges me to walk ahead of him when we spot Francisco and Alejandro at our table.

Oh, my… Talking about curious gazes and knowing smiles.

They are loud when they push to their feet while I drown in the heat of their bodies.

“You’ve finally made it,” Alejandro says, snaking his arm around me and lowering his lips to my ear. “You look beautiful, carinõ. I gather things are good, huh?”

I sense no innuendo in his voice, only warm affection, and I feel compelled to nod and smile before kissing his cheek, his fingers moving slightly at the small of my back, sending an electric current up my spine.

This evening will be interesting, it seems.

He straightens and pulls back, his eyes holding mine, while Francisco loops his arm around my waist, pulls me back into his chest, and kisses my neck below my ear.

My body reacts with goosebumps and hard nipples.

His breath is warm against my neck when he murmurs quiet words.

“I won’t pull away from you again. I promise.”

Fluid heat starts lapping at my core.

I spin around to face him when he locks my lips right there in front of everybody, with Alejandro and Kai sliding into their seats and people eating and drinking at the nearby tables.

No one is focused on us, although I feel everyone’s eyes, especially the two men at the table who exchange words, seemingly in a jovial mood.

What a difference a day makes.

Twenty-four hours ago, I was trying to decipher their behavior, they were sheer riddles to me, and the biggest takeaway was that they’d played some game. Or playing it cool by ignoring me.

Not anymore.

And it’s not like we’ve followed some grand plan. There was no plan, just a string of events that brought us here.

Especially here... Francisco having his lips locked with mine, his arm wrapped around my waist, and my chest crushed against his torso. Even his hips are tilted, and his leg is wedged between my knees.

It’s not obvious and certainly not visible to the casual bystander, but it registers with me.

We're actually spending some time kissing. And it’s more than a random kiss.
