Page 42 of When We Lose

That Saturday, I made some calls and had people come over and pick up my old car. This way it no longer occupied space in front of my house.

Later, I called a cab and made a trip to my old job.

It was four o’clock in the afternoon when I strolled in. Sonia was ecstatic to see me, and Didi, my old boss, sauntered in a few minutes later.

Our reunion was cheerful, to say the least.

We had coffee and blueberry muffins, and talked about my new job before I returned home.

It felt good.

Really good.

So good that I started working out that day. I was in Kai’s gym in his home for the rest of the evening.

That’s when I realized I had started to turn into someone else. And I was in awe with that person.

This week has been even better.

I finally found my footing and got used to my new line of work. And I love what I’m doing. And I'm good at it too.

I’m fast, detailed-oriented, diligent, and reliable. I work well with deadlines, and I’m a quick learner. I’ve spent a lot of time with Shauna, learning, and I’m on my own now.

And I love it.

Kai’s father returned from Miami this past Monday.

He and Shauna are no longer an item, and things didn’t go as smoothly as she had hoped.

The man doesn’t like women who show a smidgen of independence. And he surely didn’t like when she announced they were going separate ways.

It wasn’t like he needed her. That was clear to her as well. It was that he had considered her his property.

Speaking of that, Ted Sloane is back.

His lawyers are talking to my lawyers, and they’re looking into reaching a settlement out of court.

Kai warned me that would happen. It happened before.

If that works out as planned, I’m looking at doubling my money by the end of the year. I’m talking four million dollars in total.

Not bad for one quarter of the year.

Who knew Halloween would be so spooky this year?

On a different note, Ted Sloane’s words will go down in history as the most expensive sneering of all time.

He is not allowed to get close to me as a restraining order is in place.

I don’t spend time thinking about him. I’m only waiting for a phone call from my lawyers to learn how much bigger my bank account will get once they settle for a final number.

And that’s that with him.

When it comes to my men?

Kai will fly back this weekend.

Alejandro and Francisco will return sometime next week. Or maybe sooner.
