“I can take myself, Dad.”

“Don’t start, Gracie. How much have you had to drink, anyway? Did you go back out alone? Dressed like this?” Silence follows his question. “Come on, Gracie. You’re lucky you weren’t snatched up by some creep looking for a young blonde bride.”

Gracie snorts. “You’re insane.”

“Wait here. Don’t move.” The door closes before Oakley starts rooting through his suitcase.

“You can turn the light on so you can see,” I say, pushing up on my elbows.

“It’s fine, baby. Go to sleep, I’ll be back in a few minutes.” He slides on a random pair of pants and a T-shirt before moving to stand beside the bed and bending down to kiss me.

The kiss only lasts a few seconds, but it’s long enough for me to taste his frustration.

“Be quick. I love you.”

“I love you. Stay on your side of the bed,” he teases. I laugh in response as he leaves again, this time herding Gracie back into the hallway.

I let out a long breath and roll to my side, curling up under the blankets and falling asleep easily. I’m barely jostled from my dreamless sleep when Oakley joins me again, pulling me onto his chest and wrapping me up in his arms, telling me he loves me.

And when I wake in the morning, I smile because neither of us dared to move all night.
